Job Description
Met Council is the largest Jewish charitable organization in the United States dedicated to fighting poverty and serving the needy with compassion, integrity, and respect. Based in New York City, Met Council provides a comprehensive range of social services annually to over 350,000 clients. Their extensive service network includes 21 locations offering 100% affordable housing, family violence services, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention, and operates the world’s largest free kosher food distribution program. Through a widespread presence of 101 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and Jewish Community Centers (JCCs), Met Council delivers vital services directly within neighborhoods throughout New York City. The organization is also renowned as a national leader in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize human services: integrating technology with experienced social workers to reduce bureaucracy, accelerate access to benefits, and enable staff to devote more time to client care. Met Council embraces inclusivity as an equal opportunity employer and actively encourages individuals with a criminal record to apply.
The role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Met Council represents a pivotal executive leadership opportunity that reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The COO is a key member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to ensure alignment of the organization’s people, programs, operations, and resources with its overarching mission and strategic priorities. This position is instrumental in translating strategy into measurable action, driving operational excellence, fostering organizational effectiveness, and promoting leadership alignment across the entire organization. The incoming COO will be succeeding a long-tenured and highly respected executive leader who is retiring at the end of 2026, ensuring a planned and smooth transition. The COO will work closely with a deep bench of world-class Managing Directors who currently oversee Met Council’s day-to-day programs and operations.
This role demands an accomplished executive with a proven skillset in solving complex organizational challenges, developing high-performing teams, and building scalable infrastructure that sustains growth and impact. The COO will offer trusted strategic partnership to the CEO, align enterprise-wide decision-making, and mentor senior leadership to uphold a culture of collaboration, accountability, dignity, and trust. Responsibilities include executive oversight of diverse human service programs with a focus on quality, compliance, and organizational priorities, as well as close partnership with financial leadership to oversee budgeting and grant management. The successful COO will also champion organizational effectiveness by improving systems and processes, breaking down barriers, and advancing Met Council’s leadership in technology and AI adoption for social service expansion. This includes scaling tools that streamline benefits access, client referrals, and internal operations while safeguarding client privacy and dignity. Moreover, the COO will anticipate emerging challenges and lead transformational change initiatives that enhance capacity and ensure sustainability. The position is based in-person in New York, NY, offering a competitive salary of $300,000 per year along with a comprehensive benefits package.
