The Chef position within Northwestern Mutual plays a crucial role in delivering top-tier food services for cafeteria and catering operations. Under the guidance of the Chef Team Leader and Restaurant Manager, the Chef is responsible for preparing a wide array of menu items such as soups, roasts, casseroles, sauces, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, and bakery products. Using scratch cooking and baking techniques including roasting, sautéing, grilling, steaming, proofing, and baking, the Chef ensures that high-quality, healthy, and flavorful meals are produced consistently. This role requires a dedication to food safety and cleanliness, following strict protocols for food handling, sanitation, and equipment use to maintain a safe and hygienic kitchen environment. An integral part of the Chef’s duties also involves supporting menu planning and management by adhering to recipe standards, monitoring inventory and food storage, tracking usage, and providing feedback for menu improvements. The Chef engages in research and testing of new menu items to promote healthful eating aligned with a wellness profile, incorporating herbs, spices, and cooking techniques that enhance both quality and healthfulness of food. Exceptional communication skills are essential, as this position involves interaction with customers and servers to provide information about menu offerings and preparation techniques, ensuring a positive dining experience. Additionally, the Chef may take on leadership responsibilities during the absence of the Chef Team Leader, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to meet changing business needs, customer demands, and operational priorities. Job Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of three years of quantity restaurant or corporate dining experience
  • Knowledge of food safety standards and practices
  • Experience with scratch cooking and baking techniques including roasting, sautéing, grilling, steaming, proofing, and baking
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment
  • Strong communication skills for customer and team interactions
  • Capability to adjust work tasks and location according to business needs
  • Commitment to following recipes and menu management processes
