Job Description
Amherst College is a prestigious liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for its commitment to academic excellence and a diverse, inclusive campus community. As one of the most selective institutions in the nation, Amherst offers a rich educational environment with a focus on broad exposure to knowledge, personal growth, and civic responsibility. The college fosters a culture that values diversity in terms of race, socioeconomic backgrounds, and geographic origins, enriching the experience for students, faculty, and staff alike. Amherst College also supports a strong commitment to providing a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that encourages collaboration and mutual respect across its campus.
The Casual Retail Dining Assistant position at Amherst College is a part-time, casual role that plays a vital part in supporting the campus dining experience. This position is designed to contribute to delivering high-quality food and beverage service to the Amherst community, primarily within retail dining locations. The role focuses on providing excellent customer service while preparing and serving food and specialty beverages, including barista-style espresso drinks. This position requires the ability to handle various responsibilities such as food preparation, cashiering, stocking, and maintaining cleanliness standards at the retail food outlets across campus.
Salary for this position is competitive and ranges from $16.50 to $17.00 per hour, reflecting factors such as education, training, experience, and tenure status. Although the role is casual with no benefits, it offers valuable work experience in a dynamic environment that is central to student life on campus. The work schedule is highly flexible and varies according to the operational needs of the College, including the possibility of working at multiple locations which may require walking across the Amherst campus.
As a Retail Dining Assistant, you will be dedicated to food safety by implementing proper food handling measures, such as labeling, dating, and rotating products to maintain freshness and safety. You will contribute to a welcoming food service environment by offering high-quality breakfast and lunch items, expertly crafted espresso beverages, and positively engaging with customers. The role also involves light administrative duties and cashier responsibilities, particularly at the Mammoth Market, ensuring accurate cash handling and supportive customer interaction.
This position also requires a commitment to cleanliness and maintenance, with duties including ware washing, cleaning dining areas, and restocking supplies. Effective and respectful communication is essential, both with customers and team members, ensuring smooth operations and that any concerns or operational needs are promptly conveyed. The role is designated as essential, which means there may be occasions requiring work during College closures.
This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in gaining experience in the food service and retail sector within an academic setting. It offers opportunities for professional growth and development and is suitable for those who appreciate flexible schedules and enjoy working in a vibrant community environment.
