Job Description

Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) is a renowned hospitality company based in New York City, recognized for creating some of the city's most beloved restaurants, cafes, and bars. Founded by Danny Meyer in 1985 with the opening of the iconic Union Square Cafe, USHG has expanded its portfolio over the decades to include a diverse range of acclaimed dining establishments and fast-casual concepts. The group's guiding philosophy revolves around delivering outstanding food coupled with a unique warmth and signature hospitality, which has established USHG as a leader in the hospitality industry.

One of USHG's notable concepts is Daily Provisions, which was born in 2017 from the kitchen of Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe. Daily Provisions is a growing collection of all-day neighborhood cafes with authentic restaurant roots, known for its elevated take on familiar dishes. Its menu features signature items such as crullers, all-day breakfast sandwiches with runny yolks, and freshly brewed coffee and teas. In the afternoon and evening, Daily Provisions serves chef-driven salads, made-to-order sandwiches, seasonal sides, and comforting dinner dishes like the famous Roast Chicken. The brand’s success and popularity among New Yorkers have led to its expansion across multiple locations in New York, Jersey City, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

The role of Cafe Sous Chef at Daily Provisions is a pivotal position responsible for supporting the Cafe Chef in maintaining the highest standards and quality in the daily kitchen operations. This role encompasses oversight of kitchen prep, execution of the menu items throughout different service periods, and ensures a smooth, timely flow of service. The Cafe Sous Chef also plays a crucial part in managing and developing the kitchen team members, including Line Cooks and other back-of-house staff. By fostering an environment of consistent feedback, training, and career growth, the Cafe Sous Chef helps uphold the culture of excellence and professionalism expected at USHG.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong culinary background, ideally with at least two years of leadership experience in a casual dining environment. They should be passionate about culinary excellence and committed to exceeding guest expectations. This role requires effective communication skills to collaborate with both front-of-house and back-of-house teams, along with a strong understanding of food safety, kitchen systems, and operational procedures. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and certification in a hospitality-related field are advantageous.

At USHG, extending Enlightened Hospitality is core to the company ethos. The Cafe Sous Chef position offers a competitive salary starting at $70,000 annually, with eligibility for performance-based bonuses. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, paid time off, parental leave, a matched 401(k) plan, employee assistance programs, life insurance, dining credits and discounts, pre-tax commuter benefits, and opportunities for professional growth and mentorship. Working at USHG means joining a passionate community committed to integrity, creativity, and continuous learning, supported by a culture that values teamwork and respect.

Ultimately, this role is essential in delivering the exceptional guest experiences USHG is known for, while also contributing to a positive, nurturing workplace where culinary talent can thrive and advance. The Cafe Sous Chef acts as a bridge between management and kitchen staff, helping to ensure that daily operations run smoothly and that every dish meets the company’s high standards of quality and hospitality.
