Job Description
Joe Coffee Company is a prominent specialty coffee roaster and retail company founded in 2003 by Jonathan Rubinstein in Manhattan's West Village. Starting as a single coffee shop with a simple vision to brew exceptional coffee and create a welcoming community space, Joe Coffee has grown into a trusted name in the New York coffee scene. With 23 locations throughout New York and its own Roastery in Long Island City, Joe Coffee is an innovative leader committed to quality, education, and hospitality within the specialty coffee industry. The company prides itself on creating a warm and inclusive environment for both customers and employees, fostering a culture of learning and community engagement.
The Barista in Training (BIT) role at Joe Coffee is designed for individuals passionate about coffee and eager to grow their skills in a supportive, fast-paced environment. This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to develop foundational barista skills, engage in hands-on training, and work towards full certification as a Joe Coffee barista. The role is ideal for candidates who are curious, motivated, and customer-service oriented. BITs support daily café operations by preparing beverages that meet Joe Coffee's high-quality standards, maintaining cleanliness, and delivering exceptional hospitality. Compensation for this hourly role is $17 plus tips, reflecting the value Joe Coffee places on its team members.
The BIT position requires a motivated and friendly individual who thrives in a collaborative setting and demonstrates reliability and adaptability. Key duties include operating the point of sale (POS) system accurately, ensuring food safety and cleanliness, preparing a variety of non-espresso beverages such as drip coffee, cold brew, tea, and seasonal drinks, and actively participating in ongoing training and feedback sessions. This role provides a pathway to career development within the company through mentorship, comprehensive barista training, and opportunities for continuing education.
Joe Coffee emphasizes employee wellness and growth, offering an extensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance after six months, commuter benefits, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Financially, team members have access to a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, bonuses, and incentive programs such as employee referral rewards and team-based recognitions. The company fosters a vibrant community culture with special events like The Joe Show, holiday celebrations, and latte art competitions, ensuring a supportive workplace beyond daily job functions.
By joining Joe Coffee as a Barista in Training, you become part of a team committed to delivering exceptional coffee experiences, nurturing professional growth, and upholding a standard of excellence that has defined Joe Coffee as a pioneer in the specialty coffee movement. This role offers a fulfilling start to a potential career in the coffee industry for those who appreciate quality, hospitality, and team collaboration.
