Job Description

Our restaurant is an exquisitely redesigned dining establishment nestled within New York City's only Japanese owned and operated luxury hotel, located conveniently on the prestigious Park Avenue near Grand Central Station. This prime location attracts both business and leisure travelers seeking an authentic and refined culinary experience. The restaurant offers a unique and sophisticated 11-course tasting menu that pays homage to traditional Japanese cuisine with a keen focus on seasonal ingredients. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and traditional execution, each dish promises to deliver a memorable gastronomic journey to our discerning guests.

We are currently on the lookout for a seasoned and polished Assistant Restaurant Manager to join this exciting new operation. This role is vital in ensuring seamless administrative support and the flawless execution of established Standard Operating Procedures within the restaurant. The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation and understanding of Japanese cuisine, ingredients, and beverages, particularly in fine wines and sake. While holding a Certified Sake Sommelier credential would be a distinct advantage, it is not mandatory. Additionally, proficiency in understanding and speaking Japanese is a preferred skill that will enhance communication within our multicultural team and with our esteemed guests.

The Assistant Restaurant Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting daily operations with an emphasis on guest satisfaction and team management. This includes hands-on floor support where the manager will engage directly with guests to ensure a superior dining experience. They will supervise and guide staff members, manage shift assignments, and ensure all side work is completed efficiently to maintain high service standards. Financial responsibilities such as server cash-out reports and cash handling will also fall under this role, ensuring accuracy and accountability.

A significant aspect of the role involves managing guest relations and outreach. The Assistant Restaurant Manager will oversee the reservations system to maximize booking potential and engage with guests to confirm reservations, dietary restrictions, and special occasions. They will collect and assess guest feedback, working closely with the General Manager to address any concerns or opportunities for service enhancement.

The role demands proactive involvement in preshift meetings, including preparing daily preshift templates filled with relevant information such as reservation details, service points, and product descriptions. Leading preshift discussions, especially around special occasions and dietary accommodations, will be crucial to align the team and elevate service quality. Scheduling is another key area where the Assistant Restaurant Manager will collaborate with the General Manager to optimize shift pars, foster team strengths, and forecast staffing needs aligned with upcoming reservations and events.

Beyond operational duties, the Assistant Restaurant Manager will liaise with the Chef team to keep menus current, using industry-standard document and design software such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Excel. They will also update the restaurant's website promptly following any menu changes to maintain accurate and appealing guest information.

Training material management, including menu descriptions, food and beverage knowledge, and steps of service, will be part of ongoing efforts to maintain staff excellence. The Assistant Restaurant Manager will also contribute to recruitment by following up on postings, conducting initial interviews, and facilitating the transition of candidates to the General Manager.

Beverage support responsibilities include assisting the General Manager with daily requisitions, restocking, inventory planning, and updating beverage menus. The role extends to maintaining POS/Micros and Binwise applications to ensure operational efficiency during service and inventory activities.

Salary is competitive and will reflect the candidate's experience, with the potential for additional compensation based on performance evaluations focusing on service improvement and revenue targets within 3 to 6 months. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a unique luxury hospitality venue blending Japanese heritage with New York City's vibrant dining scene, promising both professional growth and a rewarding career path.
