Baltimore, MD, USA

Johns Hopkins University (JHU), established in 1876, is a private research institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. It was named after its first benefactor, American entrepreneur and philanthropist Johns Hopkins. He bequeathed $7 million to fund the university and a hospital in Baltimore.

This donation was the largest philanthropic gift in U.S. history at the time and laid the foundation for JHU's commitment to integrating teaching and research.

Academic Divisions

JHU comprises nine academic divisions:

  • Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences
  • Whiting School of Engineering
  • Carey Business School
  • School of Education
  • School of Medicine
  • School of Nursing
  • Peabody Institute
  • Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies

These divisions offer a wide range of programs across disciplines such as health professions, arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, and business.

Campus Locations

The university operates multiple campuses, including:

  • Homewood campus in North Baltimore, housing the School of Engineering and the School of Arts & Sciences
  • East Baltimore campus, home to the School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health
  • Facilities in Washington, D.C., and Italy
  • Regional satellite campuses throughout Maryland
  • A biotech hub north of Washington, D.C.

Research and Recognition

JHU is renowned for its research contributions, leading U.S. universities in annual research and development expenditures for over four consecutive decades. The School of Medicine, established in 1893, has international recognition for its pioneering biomedical research and is widely considered a top U.S. medical school.

Challenges and Continuity

In 2025, JHU faced challenges due to federal funding cuts, with the elimination of $800 million in grants by the Trump administration. This led to the largest job cuts in the university's history, affecting over 2,000 positions domestically and internationally.

Despite these challenges, JHU continues to uphold its mission of advancing knowledge and improving the world through education, research, and service.
