Pearl City, HI, USA

Big City Diner is a locally owned and operated restaurant chain in Hawaii, renowned for its hearty portions, familiar flavors, and friendly service. Established in 1998 by Lane Muraoka, a local from Kailua, the first location opened in Kaimuki. It offered a diverse menu that blends American and Hawaii Regional cuisines.

The menu features a variety of local creations, including the Boneless Korean Kalbi Steak, Vegetable Stir-Fry, and the iconic Loco Moco—a hamburger patty served over rice, topped with eggs and brown gravy. For breakfast, popular choices include roasted macadamia nut pancakes with haupia cream sauce and Grandma's kimchi fried rice.

Locations

Over the years, Big City Diner expanded to multiple locations across Oahu. These include:

  • Kailua Town Center
  • Pearlridge Center
  • Windward Mall
  • Waipio Shopping Center
  • Kailua, HI, USA
  • Pearl City, HI, USA
  • Waipahu, HI, USA

However, the original Kaimuki location closed in May 2024 after nearly 26 years, citing rising operational costs and staffing challenges.

Current Operations

Despite the closure, the remaining locations continue to serve the community with a comfortable dining experience. The focus remains on quality food and exceptional service.
