Job Description

The YMCA of Greater New York is a well-established nonprofit organization founded in 1852, with a rich history of serving the diverse population of New York City. The organization operates through 24 branches and impacts the lives of more than half a million New Yorkers annually. With a mission focused on empowering youth, improving health, and strengthening community ties, the YMCA is a cornerstone institution for fostering active, engaged, and inclusive environments for individuals and families. The YMCA of Greater New York champions a people-focused approach, cultivating a culture of learning, leadership, and collaboration that drives community impact, supported by their innovative "LEAP" career framework, which emphasizes leadership, empowerment, accountability, and personal growth.

The Dodge YMCA, part of this dynamic network, is currently looking for a Youth Coach/Trainer. This role is crucial in promoting physical activity, sportsmanship, and youth development within the community. The Youth Coach/Trainer will be responsible for leading groups or teams of children and teens, fostering progressive skill development in designated sports. Through guided coaching and inclusive practices, the coach will enhance participants' physical competence and confidence, teach healthy competition principles, and create a welcoming environment that encourages a lifelong commitment to physical fitness.

As a Youth Coach/Trainer at the Dodge YMCA, the successful candidate will ensure all participants enjoy a fun, safe, and positive experience. They will demonstrate exceptional service and hospitality to program participants and their families, nurturing an all-inclusive, supportive learning space. The role involves teaching age-appropriate progressive lessons, encouraging skill demonstration opportunities, and coaching games that ensure equal playing time for all kids. Additionally, the coach is responsible for team equipment management and fostering team unity and spirit.

The position requires availability on Saturday evenings to support the program effectively. The Youth Coach/Trainer must embody the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions. They will work closely with supervisors to develop program objectives, schedule practices and games, design written practice plans, and supervise players for safety and engagement. The coach must adjust coaching styles to meet the varied needs of participants, emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship over winning, and effectively communicate with parents or guardians regarding schedules, progress, and additional YMCA opportunities.

Other responsibilities include ensuring equipment safety and proper function, promoting program recruitment efforts, providing direction to volunteers, reporting incidents to management, participating in trainings and special events, maintaining clean and safe activity spaces, and adhering to funding expectations. The role not only demands excellent leadership and communication skills but also a deep passion for youth development and knowledge of developmental stages, along with content expertise in specific sports. The role offers a competitive hourly wage of $27.00 and the opportunity to work in a vibrant community-focused organization that values continuous learning and development.
