The Greenpoint YMCA is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Youth Chess Instructor to join its team. This role involves teaching children and teenagers fundamental chess skills in a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment. The position offers an hourly wage ranging from $25.00 to $40.00, reflecting the importance of attracting experienced and passionate instructors. The Youth Chess Instructor will be responsible for creating positive, motivational classroom experiences that build confidence and chess proficiency among participants. By fostering an inclusive and encouraging atmosphere, the instructor will help students progress through a curriculum of structured lessons covering essential chess fundamentals, tactics, and advanced concepts.

Key duties include developing program objectives in collaboration with supervisors, planning and executing age-appropriate lessons, and providing constructive feedback to pupils and their parents or guardians. The instructor will maintain the safety and supervision of their classes according to YMCA standards and ensure that program spaces are clean and well-organized. They will also play a role in recruitment and promotion efforts for the chess program, communicate clearly with families about their child’s progress, and embody the core values of the YMCA.

This position suits a candidate with a passion for chess and teaching, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt methods to diverse learners. While a USCF rating above 1000 is a plus, the YMCA places the highest value on passion for the game and the commitment to creating a fun and educational environment. The ideal candidate will also be proactive about safety, with current CPR or First Aid certification preferred, and will complete required YMCA training and child protection courses promptly after hiring.
