Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized evangelical Christian organization dedicated to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and meeting human needs without discrimination. As one of the largest charitable organizations in the United States, The Salvation Army has a rich history of providing holistic support to individuals and families in need, focusing on physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual development. The North and Central Illinois Division, specifically the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Chicago, embodies this mission by offering a safe, enriching, and sacred environment where all individuals can access programs and resources designed to promote community wellness, character development, and faith. This facility serves as a vital hub for the Southside of Chicago, reaching out to individuals, families, and seniors with a dedication to excellence in service and community engagement.
The Welcome Desk Attendant position at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is a critical front-line role within this community-centered organization. This part-time, non-exempt position offers a pay rate ranging from $17.60 to $21.11 per hour and requires a proactive individual who thrives in a dynamic, customer-focused environment. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that every member and guest experiences a welcoming, positive, and efficient introduction to the center. Duties include providing exceptional customer service, answering inquiries about the facility's numerous programs and events, managing sales transactions through a point of sale system, and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the public areas.
This role requires a combination of interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining composure. The Welcome Desk Attendant acts as a representative of The Salvation Army's mission and values, embodying a professional style that is responsive to diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. The position demands a focus on safety, including vigilance in identifying and reporting any suspicious behavior or potential hazards, as well as a commitment to the organization's policies and procedures.
The role offers an opportunity to work in a community-focused environment where personal contributions directly affect the quality of service and support provided to the community. The position involves moderate physical activity, including the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasional driving. The work environment is characterized by medium to high noise levels typical of a busy community center. Employees in this role participate in promoting a welcoming atmosphere, assisting with client record maintenance, and supporting the overall operational efficiency of the center.
The Salvation Army is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity employment. Candidates from various backgrounds, including veterans, individuals with disabilities, and those impacted by the justice system, are encouraged to apply. The organization also offers a comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees, which includes medical, dental, vision, hearing, disability, and life insurance, as well as retirement plans and generous time off. The Welcome Desk Attendant position at the Chicago Kroc Center is more than a job; it is a chance to be part of a mission-driven team making a significant impact in a vibrant urban community.
