The role of Van Driver-Non Commercial License at Community Bridges is a crucial position that supports the organization's mission by providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services to elderly, physically challenged, or limited mobility passengers. Working under the supervision of the Van Driver Trainer, the incumbent is responsible for door-to-door transportation, ensuring that clients reach medical appointments, congregate meal sites, and other vital destinations on time and securely. This position requires professionalism, patience, and a commitment to the safety and dignity of every passenger. Candidates must adhere closely to agency, union, and state safety regulations, maintain accurate records, and keep the vehicle in clean and good working order. This part-time position typically operates from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, with occasional weekend shifts, and offers wage differentials for on-call availability and bilingual skills.

Job Requirements

  • Must comply with California driving laws and regulations
  • Ability to safely transport elderly and physically or mentally limited passengers
  • Must be capable of identifying significant changes in passenger conditions and report accordingly
  • Must safely drive large passenger vans
  • Ability to determine and adjust safe and efficient routes
  • Must follow oral and written directions accurately
  • Ability to read street maps
  • Perform work independently with sound judgment in emergencies
  • Maintain standard work records
  • Collect, record, and deposit donations
  • Keep vans clean, safe, and orderly
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with passengers
  • Work cooperatively with coworkers and contacts
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening and comply with ongoing drug and alcohol testing
  • Clear Department of Justice fingerprinting
  • Possess valid California Driver's License and maintain a satisfactory driving record
  • Have reliable transportation to worksites
  • Qualify for agency vehicle insurance
  • Possess or obtain Red-Cross First Aid and CPR certificates within six months
  • Have sufficient physical strength and stamina to assist disabled passengers, including lifting 50+ pounds
  • Must speak English

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of California driving laws and regulations

  • Ability to identify and report changes in passengers’ conditions
  • Skill in driving large passenger vans safely
  • Ability to plan and determine safe, efficient driving routes
  • Proficient in following oral and written instructions
  • Ability to read and interpret street maps
  • Capacity to work independently and make sound judgments in emergencies
  • Skilled in maintaining records and handling donations
  • Effective communication and sensitivity to passenger needs
  • Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers and others
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (preferred)
  • Knowledge of wheelchair lifts, tie downs, and radio operation (preferred)
  • Basic first aid and CPR certification (preferred)
  • Understanding of safe transport protocols for communicable diseases (preferred)
  • Familiarity with local geographic area (preferred)

Job Duties

  • Drive specially-equipped vans to transport elderly and physically or mentally limited passengers safely to medical and other destinations
  • Assure the operational status of lifts and tie down equipment
  • Provide door-to-door assistance to ambulatory and non-ambulatory passengers
  • Plan and adjust transportation schedules and routes for efficiency and safety
  • Collect donations from clients and ensure timely delivery to administrative offices
  • Monitor and report visible changes in passengers’ physical or mental health to appropriate personnel
  • Perform pre-trip inspections and maintain van cleanliness and safety
  • Operate vehicles following California driving laws and safety regulations
  • Maintain accurate records of trips, mileage, and gasoline usage
  • Communicate the availability of services to potential qualifying individuals
  • Operate two-way radios in compliance with FCC regulations
  • Assist with office tasks such as scheduling, dispatching, phone handling, and report preparation as needed
  • Adhere to professional conduct standards, attend meetings, and participate in training
  • Foster effective working relationships internally and externally
  • Communicate sensitively and effectively with diverse populations
