Job Description
North Carolina A&T State University is a prominent public university dedicated to fostering education, research, and community development. Established as a land-grant institution, it serves a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff by providing quality education and contributing to the advancement of knowledge across multiple disciplines. The university is committed to promoting inclusivity, equal opportunity, and a supportive environment for all its members. Its facilities span numerous academic buildings, residence halls, and farm buildings, maintained by a dedicated Physical Plant department.
The Physical Plant at North Carolina A&T State University plays a vital role in maintaining the campus infrastructure and ensuring a clean, safe, and healthy environment for students and staff. The department's responsibilities include building maintenance, utilities management, landscaping, and housekeeping services across 44 academic buildings, 14 residence halls, and seven farm buildings. Additionally, it supervises housekeeping contractors and provides support that is essential for the university's educational mission.
Currently, the university is seeking a Temporary Housekeeper to join the Physical Plant's Housekeeping Department under the supervision of a Zone Manager. This temporary full-time position offers an hourly wage commensurate with experience and requires flexibility in scheduling based on departmental needs. The role is classified as SHRA, non-exempt, and requires on-site work without options for remote or hybrid arrangements.
The Temporary Housekeeper's responsibilities focus on ensuring that assigned buildings and surrounding areas remain clean, neat, orderly, and sanitary. Duties include vacuuming, dusting, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors; cleaning windows and blinds; moving furniture; sanitizing restrooms; collecting and sorting recyclables; and performing special cleaning projects. The role also involves minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and reporting larger repair needs. Operation and preventive maintenance of motorized cleaning equipment like vacuum cleaners, buffers, and scrubbers are essential components of the job.
Given that the role may require working during adverse weather conditions or emergencies, the candidate should be physically capable of performing medium to heavy labor, such as shoveling snow from walks and drives. The position demands adherence to workplace safety protocols, particularly when mixing or handling cleaning chemicals. Occasionally, the housekeeper may assist in setting up tables and chairs for university events.
North Carolina A&T State University values employees who contribute to a healthy campus environment while demonstrating courtesy and teamwork. This temporary appointment is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking hands-on experience in facilities maintenance within a higher education setting. Candidates with some knowledge of cleaning procedures who are motivated to work diligently in a dynamic environment are encouraged to apply. The university emphasizes equal employment opportunity and supports applicants regardless of race, religion, gender, age, or any other protected category.
