Job Description
The Child Nutrition Worker position is an essential role within the educational food service sector, typically employed by school districts or educational institutions to ensure that students receive nutritious, quality meals in a timely and pleasant manner. This position is non-exempt and involves a 9-month calendar work schedule, which aligns with the typical academic year. The Child Nutrition Department is a vital part of any school system, tasked with preparing and serving meals that meet specific nutritional guidelines while fostering a welcoming environment for students. The department's focus on hygiene, food safety, and customer service plays a crucial role in promoting the health and well-being of students.
The Child Nutrition Worker reports directly to the Child Nutrition Manager and works under their supervision to perform various food preparation and service duties. The role demands strict adherence to hygiene protocols, including proper hand washing before food preparation and maintaining cleanliness at all times to prevent contamination. Employees must comply with the department's dress code and hold a valid food handler's permit, demonstrating their commitment to health and safety standards.
Responsibilities include ordering groceries using a menu planner, recording all food requisitions, taking food temperatures before serving, preparing meals according to a pre-planned menu, and performing taste tests to ensure the quality and flavor meet established standards. The Child Nutrition Worker also manages food portions carefully by weighing, measuring, and storing unused items, preparing in advance for upcoming meals, and assisting in the service of breakfast and lunch. They check regularly to ensure an adequate quantity of food is available throughout the service period.
This position requires maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary work environment, which includes breaking down and cleaning kitchen equipment, washing dishes and utensils, sweeping, mopping, and trash removal. The Child Nutrition Worker must follow all employee safety and sanitation rules and maintain confidentiality regarding student accounts, including those eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.
Interpersonal skills are integral to this role, as the worker must treat children, adults, and coworkers with respect and courtesy while fostering a cooperative team environment. Flexibility is important, as the worker may help in other areas once their primary duties are completed. Regular attendance and punctuality are expected to maintain smooth kitchen operations.
Physically, the job demands standing for extended periods, occasional bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and the ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds. The work environment can be challenging due to high temperatures, slippery surfaces, loud noise, and the use of strong or caustic cleaning agents. The worker must be able to perform under time constraints and interact effectively with the public and colleagues.
Overall, this role plays a pivotal part in supporting student nutrition, health, and daily school life by ensuring the preparation and delivery of high-quality meals in a safe and efficient manner. The Child Nutrition Worker contributes significantly to creating a positive meal experience for students, which is crucial for their academic success and overall well-being.
