Job Description

The hiring establishment is ORBIS, a company recognized for its commitment to excellence in the shipbuilding and ship maintenance industries. ORBIS operates primarily in Groton, Connecticut, delivering high-quality industrial solutions and services that support naval and maritime operations. The company prides itself on fostering a professional atmosphere that promotes safety, quality, and productivity, making it a top choice for professionals seeking rewarding careers in the industrial sector, specifically related to naval vessels. ORBIS offers a comprehensive benefits package and competitive salary arrangements to its employees, underscoring its focus on employee satisfaction and development.\n\nThe available position is for a Torpedo Tube/Weapons Shipping and Handling Assembly Supervisor. The role comes with a salary range of $150,000 to $170,000 per year and involves a hands-on leadership capacity at the deck plate level. This role is crucial in providing coaching and mentoring supervision to deck plate supervisors to enhance workforce productivity, ensuring adherence to schedules without compromising safety or quality standards. The position is based in Groton, CT, a hub for naval shipbuilding and maintenance operations, providing a dynamic work environment where leadership and technical skills combine to support high-stakes naval assembly projects.\n\nThe primary responsibilities revolve around improving work staging, communication, and briefing for assigned workers. The supervisor will coach and mentor supervisors on establishing clear expectations for work progress, both in half-shift increments and overall outcomes, fostering worker ownership of tasks and results. This includes ensuring backup tasks are strategically planned if primary tasks encounter delays, as well as facilitating effective communication around barriers and progress updates on a half-shift basis.\n\nFurthermore, the role demands active deck plate presence by the supervisor, ensuring continuous direct observation to maintain achievable progress targets. Coaching extends to problem resolution related to paperwork, tooling, equipment, material conditions, and maintaining up-to-date work package documentation. Opportunities to improve productivity through better access to tools, equipment, and materials are to be identified and addressed proactively.\n\nThe role also involves preparing supervisors for meetings, supporting supervisors during mandatory administrative tasks, and ensuring smooth handoffs to successors and supporting trades, including the start of 2nd shift work without delays. A critical part of the position is also to coach the superior of the deck plate supervisor, such as the General Foreman or Area Superintendent, to provide continued reinforcement of sound supervisory behaviors. Candidates must demonstrate a strong industrial supervisory background, hands-on expertise in torpedo tube and weapons assembly, and a commitment to leadership and quality assurance in a fast-paced shipbuilding environment. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to critical naval projects and grow professionally within a leading company in the sector.
