Job Description
Henry Street Settlement is a renowned social service organization located in New York City, dedicated to improving the lives of residents in the Lower East Side and other parts of the city. Established more than 125 years ago, this nonprofit agency has a rich legacy of innovation and effective programming that integrates social services, arts, and healthcare to address the needs of vulnerable populations. Henry Street Settlement operates over 50 programs, making it one of the largest and most diverse social service providers in New York City. The organization aims to enrich lives, foster human progress, and create opportunities through its comprehensive and compassionate approach, touching the lives of thousands of New Yorkers annually.
As part of its ongoing mission, Henry Street Settlement is seeking a Substitute Driver for its Meals on Wheels program. This role is pivotal in ensuring that home-bound, incapacitated, and isolated seniors receive nutritious prepared meals within a designated area of Manhattan. This position is classified as per diem and part-time, offering a flexible work schedule where shifts vary from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm. The pay rate is $24 per hour, and the work is fully onsite, based out of the Lower East Side, with regular travel across Manhattan expected.
The Substitute Driver will be responsible for safely operating agency vehicles to pick up meals from caterers and deliver them directly to the clients' homes. Timely delivery and accurate distribution are crucial, as well as providing a warm and engaging interaction with seniors during the delivery process. The role also includes conducting wellness checks with clients to assess their health and safety, reporting any concerns to the program supervisor. This position requires consistency, especially in coverage on Mondays and Wednesdays, with availability to work on-call at short notice being essential.
The ideal candidate will possess at least five years of professional driving experience, a clean driving record, and advanced knowledge of the Lower East Side and Midtown Manhattan streets. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required, along with a sincere interest in serving the senior community. Physical stamina to lift and carry bags ranging from 15 to 30 pounds and the ability to navigate stairs and various weather conditions during deliveries are necessary. Candidates should be comfortable performing responsible vehicle inspections and adhering to safety protocols and organizational policies.
This role offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of isolated seniors by helping ensure they receive nutritious meals and friendly companionship through their wellness checks. Employees at Henry Street Settlement become part of a vibrant, committed team dedicated to fostering social welfare and community health in an inclusive environment. If you are compassionate, reliable, and motivated by service, this position provides a rewarding way to contribute to New York City's social fabric while enjoying flexible work hours and competitive pay.
