Job Description
General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) is a leading technology and defense company specializing in the engineering of advanced, high-technology solutions, products, and services that empower global customers to successfully complete missions across all operational domains. With a dedicated workforce of more than 12,000 professionals worldwide, GDMS is committed to innovation and excellence in defense and scientific arenas. The company prides itself on a culture rooted in trust, honesty, alignment, and transparency, promoting a supportive and flexible work environment. Employees are valued for their contributions and rewarded for their achievements, and GDMS consistently emphasizes a shared sense of purpose among its teams. GDMS offers competitive salaries and benefits, positioning itself as a highly desirable place to work for talented individuals passionate about cutting-edge defense technology and mission success.
The Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) Site Support Engineer position at GDMS offers an exciting opportunity to join the defense technology field by providing intermediate-level support for the live MUOS system. This role, titled I-Level Maintainer, is primarily tasked with assisting system operators in maintaining the ground system network of a satellite-based communication infrastructure. The position is located in Scottsdale, Arizona, with potential future deployment to Wahiawa, Hawaii, involving an 18-24 month rotation.
The role demands strong technical expertise and a proactive approach to system maintenance. The I-Level Maintainer works collaboratively with on-site operators, maintaining the integrity and functionality of the MUOS system by recreating and closing out site trouble tickets and resolving operational issues quickly and efficiently. Proactive system checks enable identification of potential problems before they affect system performance, while collaboration with development engineers ensures expedited resolution of complex issues escalated beyond the operator level. Additionally, the engineer provides on-the-job training to less experienced operators and maintainers, empowering them to independently manage and resolve system issues. The position offers the opportunity to influence critical system improvement developments by identifying deficiencies and prioritizing solutions to enhance the MUOS network.
This role requires working with a variety of operating systems, including multiple versions of Windows and UNIX-based systems like Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Solaris. Experience in configuring and monitoring various network devices including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and HAIPEs is essential, alongside familiarity with network protocols such as BGP, RDP, SCP, SFTP, SSH, SNMP, and TCP. Knowledge in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificate authentication and computer virtualization is also valuable. The successful candidate will play a vital part in supporting 24/7 site operations, including on-call responsibilities, ensuring uninterrupted system functionality.
This position favors candidates possessing Department of Defense SECRET security clearance or the ability to obtain one promptly, a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a related field, and considerable experience in similar roles. The role values strong communication skills both verbal and written, the ability to multitask under pressure, and hands-on experience with MUOS system architecture and related subsystems is highly advantageous. Familiarity with MUOS-specific network infrastructure, waveforms, radio access networks, and troubleshooting tools further enhances the candidate’s fit for this role.
GDMS's inclusion of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence applications to improve operational efficiencies reflects a commitment to continuous improvement and modernization. Candidates will benefit from a dynamic, collaborative environment where technical excellence and mission focus define success. If you are a motivated, detail-oriented engineer eager to make an impact in a leading defense technology company, this role is an exceptional fit. The annual salary range for this position is approximately $106,477 to $115,212, commensurate with experience and location-related factors. The company offers a robust benefits package, flexible work arrangements, and a supportive team culture geared toward high performance and mission success.
