The role of Sous Chef II at Sunrise Senior Living is pivotal in ensuring the highest standards of food quality, presentation, and resident satisfaction. This position is designed for a culinary professional who is passionate about culinary excellence and eager to support the kitchen operations within a senior living community. The Sous Chef II directly oversees daily food preparation, ensuring that all meals not only meet but exceed Sunrise’s rigorous standards for taste, creativity, and visual appeal. They are responsible for maintaining the consistency and quality of food through meticulous portion control and cost management, aligning with budgeted per resident day targets.

In this role, the Sous Chef II actively engages with residents during meal services, providing table touches and addressing any dining concerns to guarantee a positive and enriching experience. This position also supports the Executive Chef III by managing kitchen staff, inventory, ordering supplies, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards such as HACCP. The Sous Chef II plays a critical leadership role by mentoring kitchen staff, facilitating training sessions, and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within the culinary team. This role requires a proactive and organized individual who possesses strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to handle multiple priorities effectively.

Additionally, the Sous Chef II collaborates with the dining team to organize special events, banquets, and community activities, ensuring that food production and presentation remain exemplary during these occasions. They are also involved in record-keeping duties, ensuring all food safety logs, cleaning checklists, and inventory rotations are completed and maintained according to internal policies and regulatory requirements. Safety is a paramount concern, and the Sous Chef II works diligently to promote and enforce occupational health and safety regulations, safe food handling practices, and risk management procedures.

Job Requirements

  • Certification or college degree in culinary arts preferred
  • Minimum three years experience as a chef
  • Maintains current food services sanitation certificate
  • ServeSafe certified
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office and ability to learn new applications
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings and flexible hours
  • Knowledge of state or provincial food safety regulations
  • Ability to engage actively with residents and team members
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to uphold safety and sanitation standards

Job Duties

  • Lead daily food production and preparation and ensure that all meals are made in accordance with quality standards
  • Responsible for food presentation and ensure that each dish is high in quality and visually appealing
  • Maintain close attention to portion control and utilize techniques to ensure consistency and cost-effectiveness
  • Engage actively with residents during mealtime to gauge satisfaction and address concerns
  • Provide leadership and fill in when Executive Chef III is not present in direction of food preparation
  • Support the Executive Chef III in managing overall kitchen operations including staff supervision and inventory management
  • Collaborate with the dining team to organize and facilitate special events and community activities involving food service
