The Sous Chef (AM) position at Spenard Roadhouse is a key leadership role directly supporting the Executive Chef. This role is primarily responsible for motivating and supporting the kitchen team to produce simple yet exciting food offerings that delight guests. The Sous Chef oversees specific segments of kitchen operations as delegated by the Executive Chef and plays an essential role in driving operational excellence and staff development. This position involves managing labor costs, ensuring food cost control, and maintaining high standards for food quality and consistency. Working closely with the rest of the management team, the Sous Chef helps maintain a positive, energetic team environment and leads by example, supporting staff both on and off the line.
The role demands strong operational involvement including participating in hiring, onboarding, and training of back-of-house staff. The Sous Chef maintains accurate documentation of staff and operational matters, enforces restaurant policies and procedures, and takes ownership of opening and closing duties to ensure smooth daily kitchen functions. They are responsible for coaching, discipline, and providing positive feedback to foster growth and excellence among team members. This leadership position requires sound judgment and the ability to make decisions independently when necessary, as well as handling guest complaints with professionalism and effectiveness.
In addition to operational and staff management responsibilities, the Sous Chef is tasked with food allergen awareness and adherence to proper allergy protocols to ensure guest safety. The role also includes tracking and controlling budget areas assigned by the Executive Chef or General Manager, including food cost and waste management. Proficiency with kitchen technology systems such as the POS/KDS is important, as is the ability to step into any back-of-house position when required. This role demands a dedicated, energetic individual capable of sustaining morale and teamwork throughout shifts, while maintaining exceptional culinary standards.

Job Requirements
- minimum of 3 years back-of-house restaurant experience
- management experience preferred
- must be at least 21 years of age
- current Municipality of Anchorage Food Worker Card or SERVSAFE certification
- working knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel Google Drive and internet navigation
- ability to communicate write and understand English
