The Sommelier position at Proper Hospitality’s Austin Proper Hotel and Residences entails serving as a wine expert who curates, manages, and recommends the wine list across the hotel’s restaurants to ensure an exceptional guest experience. This role requires an individual who is passionate about wine and possesses deep knowledge across varietals, regions, and production methods. The Sommelier will collaborate closely with chefs, culinary teams, and event planners to create harmonious wine pairings that elevate guests' dining experiences. Responsibilities include maintaining a well-organized wine cellar, regularly updating the wine offerings to reflect seasonal trends, and sourcing high-quality wines through vendor relationships. This position also involves direct interaction with guests, educating them on wine selections, conducting wine tastings, and delivering superior service in wine presentation and pouring.

In addition to guest service, the Sommelier plays a pivotal role in training and mentoring front-of-house team members to enhance their wine knowledge and service skills. They also actively participate in wine-focused events and promotions that contribute to both guest satisfaction and increased beverage revenues. The Sommelier is expected to manage inventory and cost controls rigorously and maintain compliance with all health, safety, and alcohol service regulations.

Job Requirements

  • Certification as a sommelier preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in sommelier or related wine-focused role
  • In-depth knowledge of wines and production techniques
  • Ability to curate and manage wine lists
  • Strong communication and guest service skills
  • Ability to train and mentor staff
  • Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for long periods
  • Flexibility to work evenings weekends and holidays

Job Qualifications

  • Certification as a sommelier such as Court of Master Sommeliers or WSET preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in a sommelier or wine-focused role in fine dining or upscale hotel
  • In-depth knowledge of wines vineyards production techniques and wine regions
  • Proven experience in wine list curation inventory management and wine sales
  • Strong understanding of food and wine pairings and communication skills
  • Exceptional knowledge of wine varietals regions and production methods
  • Expertise in wine service including decanting pouring and bottle presentation
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage inventory and stock levels
  • Ability to work well under pressure in fast-paced high-volume environment

Job Duties
