Job Description
Crown Shy is the first solo project of Chef James Kent, a distinguished culinary artist whose roots and experiences in downtown New York have profoundly shaped his approach to fine dining. Positioned in the iconic Art Deco landmark at 70 Pine Street, Crown Shy delivers a unique dining experience that seamlessly blends neighborhood warmth with the sophistication of fine dining. The restaurant’s elegant dining room and bar, highlighted by floor-to-ceiling 16-foot windows and an open kitchen, create an inviting atmosphere that reflects both transparency and intimacy.
At Crown Shy, the culinary philosophy is deeply embedded in European techniques while embracing global flavors inspired by the Chef’s childhood, travels, and the melting pot of cuisines that New York City offers. This approach has earned the establishment prestigious accolades including a Michelin star and two stars from The New York Times, recognizing it as one of the most acclaimed new restaurants in the city. Crown Shy prides itself in not only the excellence of its food but also the holistic hospitality experience it offers to guests.
The Sommelier role at Crown Shy is a pivotal position responsible for maintaining the integrity of an eclectic and globally diverse wine program. This full-time position requires a passionate individual skilled in wine service, who can foster smooth and thoughtful interactions between the wine list, the dining room, and guests. Collaborating closely with the Server team, the Sommelier ensures impeccable guest satisfaction through attentive and knowledgeable wine service. The wine selection spans all major winegrowing regions, with a focus on both historical significance and emerging producers, reflecting a commitment to diversity and quality.
This role extends beyond wine expertise; it demands a warm and appreciative demeanor not only towards guests but also towards colleagues across departments including pastry, savory, dining room, and facilities. As Crown Shy embraces a 'whole house' mentality, every team member contributes to the overarching goal of extraordinary guest experiences. The Sommelier is expected to be adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to personalize service to meet varied guest needs. Physical stamina is also important as the role involves extended periods of standing, carrying weight, and navigating the restaurant environment.
The position demands availability on weeknights, weekends, and holidays to ensure that Crown Shy’s high standards of service are consistently met. In return, Crown Shy offers a comprehensive benefits package, a supportive and growth-oriented work environment, and opportunities to advance within the hospitality industry. The restaurant also values employee well-being and community, providing paid time off, commuter benefits, and employee assistance programs. With a referral program to reward team-building efforts, Crown Shy invites passionate hospitality professionals to join their esteemed ranks and contribute to the continued success and distinction of this vibrant culinary establishment.
