We are currently seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Sommelier to join the Abe & Louie9s Boston team. This full-time position offers competitive pay of up to $22 per hour plus commission on wine sales, reflecting the importance we place on the role of a wine expert within our establishment. The Sommelier will play a crucial role in elevating our guests9 dining experience by curating and maintaining a comprehensive wine list that perfectly complements our award-winning menu. This role is not only about selecting wines but also about engaging with guests to recommend the perfect pairings based on their personal tastes and meal choices.

In collaboration with the culinary team and Food and Beverage Manager, the Sommelier is responsible for continuously updating and improving the wine list to align with seasonal menus and emerging trends in the wine industry. The role demands expertise in wine storage, serving, and tasting, as well as strong vendor relationship management to negotiate favorable purchase prices and source exclusive selections. Moreover, the Sommelier supports the service team by training wait staff on wine knowledge and presenting options effectively to guests.

Job Requirements

  • High school education
  • prior experience as a Sommelier or similar role
  • able to communicate in English
  • experience using Point of Sale (POS) system
  • sommelier certification preferred
  • must meet legal minimum age requirement to serve alcohol
  • coordination skills to pour and carry several drinks and plates
  • extensive knowledge of different wines and winemaking process

Job Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a Sommelier, Wine Steward/Stewardess or similar role
  • sommelier certification preferred
  • experience using a Point of Sale (POS) system
  • knowledge of different wines and the winemaking process
  • excellent communication skills in English
  • strong attention to detail
  • teamwork and customer service skills

Job Duties

  • Create and update the wine list in coordination with chefs and the Food and Beverage Manager
  • recommend food and wine pairings
  • advise guests on wines based on their personal tastes and food choices
  • inform guests about different varieties of wines and prices
  • ensure wines are served at the right temperature and within the proper glassware
  • store open bottles properly to maintain strong taste
  • manage wine cellar and ensure it9s fully-stocked
  • train wait staff on available wines
  • negotiate purchase prices with vendors
  • organize wine tasting days or wine of the month events
  • ask guests for ID to verify legal drinking age
  • comply with all health and safety regulations
