Job Description
Suffolk is a distinguished national enterprise that excels in building, innovating, and investing across the construction sector. Established as a leader in construction management services, Suffolk extends its expertise through complementary business lines, including real estate investment, design, self-perform construction, and technology start-up ventures via Suffolk Technologies. With a focus on integrating cutting-edge data analytics, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology through their proprietary Seamless Platform, Suffolk is at the forefront of connecting design, construction, and operations to deliver smarter, more predictable results that redefine how America builds its infrastructure and communities.
Suffolk is headquartered in Boston and operates 17 offices nationwide, including key markets such as New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With annual revenues exceeding $9 billion and a workforce of 3,000 employees, Suffolk manages some of the most complex and transformative projects across sectors such as healthcare, life sciences, education, gaming, aviation, transportation, government, mission critical, and commercial markets. The company is privately held and led by its founder, chairman, and CEO, John Fish. Ranked number 8 on Engineering News-Record's list of Top CM-at-Risk Contractors, Suffolk is recognized for its excellence and innovation in project delivery.
The role offered is for an AI Engineer based in Fort Myers, FL, who will act as the critical on-site catalyst transforming artificial intelligence concepts into practical, operational solutions. The AI Engineer will partner with the project’s AI Champion—such as Project Managers or Superintendents—to identify pain points, redesign workflows, and deploy AI agents that streamline and enhance construction management processes. This includes accelerating Requests for Information (RFIs), improving lookahead planning, progress updates, materials tracking, and more.
The AI Engineer will lead opportunity discovery efforts, assess process and data maturity at job sites, and map value streams to identify high-impact AI use cases with low implementation overhead. They will evaluate off-the-shelf and platform AI tools, launch pilot programs, and scale successful initiatives while developing minimum viable product (MVP) AI agents using AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, ChatGPT Enterprise, and other frameworks. This hands-on role requires enterprise-grade engineering practices including Agentic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines and automation infrastructures like GitHub Actions.
Collaboration with Data Engineering will be key in designing and maintaining ETL pipelines, API integrations, and event-driven connectors that feed AI models. The AI Engineer will orchestrate cross-cloud AI services involving AWS, OpenAI, and Azure technologies behind secure custom connectors to seamlessly deploy AI solutions across projects. Change enablement is critical to this role: the engineer will train crews, gather feedback, iterate on solutions, track adoption and ROI, and embed agents into daily workflows and standard operating procedures.
Strong communication skills are necessary to regularly brief project leadership and clients on AI impact and contribute to Suffolk's cutting-edge initiative known as the "Construction Site of the Future." The position demands adherence to Suffolk’s strict information security, data governance, and client confidentiality standards on every AI tool deployed. Candidates should be prepared to travel and work on active construction job sites for effective implementation and support.
In summary, joining Suffolk as an AI Engineer offers the opportunity to be at the nexus of construction innovation and artificial intelligence. The role is well-suited for professionals with a strong background in AI engineering, full-stack data applications, and real-world experience implementing large language model and agentic AI solutions in complex industrial environments. Suffolk’s comprehensive total rewards program supports employees physically, emotionally, and financially, providing competitive salaries, comprehensive health benefits, generous paid time off, 401(k) matching, and more to empower you and your family.
