The Senior Staff Veterinarian role at UT Southwestern is a pivotal position within the Animal Resource Center, based on the Dallas campus, requiring full-time onsite presence. This role focuses on supporting biomedical research by delivering expert medical and surgical care to research animals, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and compliance with ethical and regulatory frameworks. The veterinarian plays a critical role in collaborating with researchers and institutional committees to maintain optimal animal health and welfare standards. Duties include overseeing quarantine processes, managing colony health, and supporting institutional protocol reviews related to animal care. The Senior Staff Veterinarian is also positioned as a valued leader who acts in the absence of the Animal Resources Center Director, offering expertise and guidance on animal health matters. The role demands a professional commitment to continuous learning and development, with a preference for candidates holding ACLAM board certification, although this is not mandatory. The working hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with rotational weekend and holiday duties. Job Requirements
- DVM or VMD degree from accredited veterinarian medical association school
- completion of two to three year postdoctoral training program in laboratory animal medicine
- 3 years to 5 years related veterinary experience
- current license to practice veterinary medicine in the United States upon hire
Job Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree from an accredited veterinary medical association school
- completion of two to three year postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine
- 3 to 5 years of related veterinary experience
- current license to practice veterinary medicine in the United States
- preferred American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) diplomate
- strong interpersonal and communication skills
- knowledge of regulatory guidelines and ethical considerations related to laboratory animal care
- ability to collaborate effectively with researchers and institutional committees
Job Duties
- Provides medical and surgical care for research animals
- coordinates health assessments of incoming non-commercial research animals
- assists in Institutional Animal Care and Research Advisory Committee protocol reviews
- represents Animal Resources Center Director concerning animal health issues in event of his/her absence
- communicates with research staff and faculty regarding animal health and welfare
- coordinates quarantine and health maintenance of animal colonies
- performs other duties as assigned
