Job Description
BP is a global leader in energy production and innovation, operating across a variety of sectors including oil, gas, renewables, and convenience retail. The organization is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace where employees are empowered to grow, learn, and contribute to sustainable business practices. With a strong emphasis on innovation, operational excellence, and community engagement, BP offers a dynamic environment for professionals looking to make a significant impact within the energy and retail sectors. The company supports its workforce through comprehensive benefits, flexible work arrangements, and a commitment to equity and accessibility for all employees.
The Senior Finance Advisor role within BP’s Finance Group is pivotal for the company-owned, company-operated (COCO) operations portfolio, specifically focusing on the Thorntons brand within the US convenience retail market. This position is responsible for steering the financial performance of Thorntons, encompassing overall margin delivery, cost management, and economic execution strategies. The role acts as a vital financial leader and advisor, collaborating with multiple departments including Operations, Merchandising & Food, Supply Chain, and Strategy teams, to promote profitable growth and enhance performance. The Senior Finance Advisor will provide end-to-end financial guidance, ensuring disciplined capital allocation and making commercially sound decisions that support business as usual activities as well as critical transformation initiatives.
Key responsibilities include commercial finance and performance management, where the incumbent will oversee Thorntons’ finance and accounting leadership and maintain robust financial reporting and controls. Business partnering is equally critical; the advisor will serve as a trusted finance thought partner, develop sophisticated financial models, conduct scenario analyses, and evaluate risks that inform strategic decisions and trade-offs. Planning, forecasting, and insight generation are major aspects of the role, requiring the advisor to lead budgeting exercises, produce executive-level financial narratives, and support long-term strategic planning enhanced by automation and AI-driven analytics.
Maintaining stringent governance and control oversight across initiatives is also essential, including safeguarding against management overrides and ensuring compliance with BP’s financial policies. Leadership skills are crucial as well; the advisor will develop and inspire finance team members, influence senior stakeholders without direct authority, and represent the finance function in key governance and steering committees. This leadership extends to driving transformation efforts aimed at standardizing and improving finance workflows to enhance decision-making effectiveness, speed, and accountability.
The role demands 8 to 10 years of experience in commercial finance, particularly within retail, convenience, food and beverage, or merchandising-led businesses. Candidates should possess a profound understanding of complex operating models and multi-partner governance environments. Strong commercial acumen, financial skills, and a demonstrated ability to act as a commercial partner—not solely as a finance controller—are vital. Effective communication skills to engage with both finance and non-finance senior stakeholders and a continuous improvement mindset are also essential.
Educational qualifications include a degree in Business, Economics, Finance, or equivalent. This full-time hybrid position offers an anticipated base salary range between $155,000 and $185,000 annually, complemented by generous paid vacation, holidays, parental leave, and a comprehensive rewards package including discretionary bonuses, long-term incentives, and retirement benefits such as a 401k matching program. Additional benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as life and disability coverage. Travel requirements are minimal, estimated up to 10 percent. BP is an equal opportunity employer committed to accessibility and reasonable accommodation throughout the hiring process.
