Student Housing at UC Irvine is a robust, self-funded department that manages six housing communities and three support units. It employs over 300 staff members and between 300 and 400 student workers, operating with an annual budget of $120 million. This department accommodates approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students, and their families across more than 250 buildings spanning roughly 3.3 million square feet. Currently, Student Housing provides residences for 51% of UCI's enrolled students, working alongside a third-party housing partner, American Campus Communities. The department aims to increase housing capacity to 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan. Along with housing, it offers comprehensive maintenance and repair services to ensure optimal living conditions for student residents.

The role being offered is a skilled Custodial position within the Student Housing department. Under the supervision of either the Custodial Supervisor or Assistant Custodial Supervisor, this role entails performing a range of skilled and semi-skilled cleaning, housekeeping, and general maintenance tasks. These duties demand a higher level of training, skill, independence, physical effort, and experience compared to basic custodial roles. Personnel in this position are expected to operate specialized equipment such as pressure washers, carpet extraction machines, and other cleaning tools essential for maintaining the student housing facilities. Work assignments might include a variety of locations such as residence halls, apartments (both occupied and unoccupied), common areas, buildings, and exterior spaces.

Additional responsibilities involve the setup and teardown of special equipment and furniture. Effective communication skills in English are necessary to interact directly with staff and students, submit written reports, and complete work orders. The position also requires responsibility for the security and maintenance of master keys and assigned equipment. Employees must be able to operate motorized carts and university vehicles for job-related tasks. The role occasionally requires working evenings, weekends, and overtime. The expected hourly pay for this recruitment is $25.00.

This position demands a candidate capable of physical tasks such as lifting loads over 50 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders, and responding promptly to after-hours emergencies or disaster situations. It requires adherence to the University of California Principles of Community and the ability to work cooperatively within a team, often serving as a leader for small groups of custodial or student staff. The role is well-suited for candidates with custodial or related cleaning experience who hold a valid California driver’s license and are proficient in operating cleaning and floor care equipment.
