The Senior Cook/Chef role at Connecticut Children’s offers an exciting opportunity to be a vital part of this mission. This position involves coordinating, supervising, and directing the activities of prep cooks and other kitchen personnel engaged in preparing and cooking food within a healthcare setting. As a key member of the food service team, the Senior Cook/Chef will ensure an efficient, profitable, and high-quality food service operation that aligns with ARAMARK and Health System Services (HSS) standards. Responsibilities include monitoring food production programs to maintain budget and forecasted costs per meal, verifying food production numbers and recipe adherence, and devising special dishes and recipes tailored to the specific nutritional and dietary needs of pediatric patients. This role demands adherence to stringent safety, sanitation, and nutritional standards, including compliance with HACCP, OSHA, and various federal and state regulations. The Senior Cook/Chef is directly involved in ensuring patient and customer satisfaction by maintaining excellent quality, appearance, taste, and temperature of food served. Additionally, the position requires engagement in staff training, workflow management, inventory oversight, catering event preparations, and maintaining a clean and well-organized dining environment. This role is critical in delivering meals that meet the specific needs of children, including managing dietary restrictions and allergies with precision and care. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or higher education equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years prior experience or Associate's degree or equivalent in Culinary, Hotel/Restaurant, or Food Service
  • Serve safe or equivalent food handling certification, obtain within 3 months if not currently certified
  • Ability to maintain friendly and efficient spirit of service
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions
  • Work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions
  • Ability to work with confidential information
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Capable of conducting and assessing kitchen inventory
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Knowledge of dietary restrictions and allergies in patient care
  • Ability to assemble patient trays accurately for dietary restrictions

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years of prior experience or Associate's degree in Culinary, Hotel/Restaurant or Food Service
  • Serve safe or equivalent food handling certification
  • Strong management and leadership skills
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Experience with delegating tasks and maintaining fast speed of service

Job Duties

  • Coordinate, perform, supervise, and direct activities of prep cooks and kitchen personnel
  • Control and monitor food production programs and budgeted costs
  • Verify food production numbers and recipe adherence
  • Cook and prepare food according to recipes and portion controls
  • Devise special dishes and develop recipes with Production Manager
  • Ensure compliance with safety, sanitation, and nutrition standards including HACCP and OSHA
  • Assist customer service associates and manage food service operations
  • Maintain patient and customer satisfaction on food quality, appearance, taste, and temperature
  • Monitor workflow, production specifications, and inventory control
  • Assist with catering events and cash management
  • Train production staff and maintain records and compliance
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations including civil rights and employment laws
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
