The Workers Compensation Senior Claims Specialist position is designed for individuals who excel in analyzing and processing moderately complex to complex insurance claims, specifically within the commercial property casualty domain. In this role, specialists leverage the latest technology and best practices to review claims related to bodily injury or property loss, making informed decisions on liability, compensability, and settlement negotiations within their assigned authority limits. The position demands a high level of technical expertise, critical thinking, and effective communication skills to handle claims efficiently and fairly.

This role also offers opportunities to contribute to team leadership by assisting Claims Team Managers in assigning claims, providing technical guidance, and monitoring team caseloads. Training is a crucial aspect of success in this position, beginning with mandatory attendance and active participation in a one-week onsite training session at the Plano, TX office. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of either Hoffman Estates, IL, or Indianapolis, IN, and will be expected to work in the office twice a month. However, candidates based in Ohio, Montana, and Minnesota may be eligible for 100% remote work, reflecting Liberty Mutual's flexible work policies tailored to geographic considerations.

The role may be filled at either the Senior Claims Specialist I or Senior Claims Specialist II level, with salary ranges commensurate with experience, skills, education, certifications, and location. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training
  • 3 to 5 years directly related work experience in claims
  • Ability to work in office twice a month for candidates residing within 50 miles of Hoffman Estates, IL or Indianapolis, IN
  • Eligible for 100% remote work if located in Ohio, Montana or Minnesota
  • Ability to participate in mandatory 1-week onsite training in Plano, TX
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Required to obtain and maintain applicable licenses

Job Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate and negotiate with customers and conduct investigations
  • Leadership ability and demonstrated time management skills to delegate work appropriately and organize resources effectively
  • Advanced knowledge of claims case handling practices, legal liability, insurance policy coverage, and state tort laws as normally acquired through a bachelor’s degree or equivalent training plus 3 to 5 years directly related work experience
  • Required to obtain and maintain all applicable licenses

Job Duties

  • Plans and conducts investigations of claims including interviewing insureds, witnesses and claimants, collecting and evaluating documentation and securing evidence
  • Determines need for and engages independent adjusters, cause and origin experts and independent medical examiners
  • Refers claims to subrogation group or Special Investigations Unit as appropriate
  • Assesses policy coverage and notifies insured of any issues
  • Determines and establishes reserve requirements and adjusts reserves as necessary
  • Assesses actual damages and conducts negotiations within assigned authority limits to settle claims
  • Coordinates litigation activities to ensure timely and cost-effective resolution
  • Acts as senior technical professional on team assisting with escalated issues
  • Mentors and trains new team members
  • Participates in quality review processes
  • Participates in Suit Committees, Roundtables, Arbitrations, Mediations, field investigations and closed file reviews
  • Performs other duties as assigned
