The Seasonal Chef Instructor, Pastry role is a unique opportunity to join this vibrant environment as an in-store expert on baking and pastry arts. This position focuses primarily on delivering top-tier culinary education to customers, fostering an inviting and engaging atmosphere that encourages a passion for baking. Responsibilities include teaching detailed pastry techniques and baking fundamentals while promoting Sur La Table’s array of retail products to drive sales and support business objectives. The instructor must demonstrate exceptional customer service skills, embody the company’s culture, and act as a brand ambassador to enhance the overall shopper experience.

Working 12 to 16 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, this seasonal part-time role requires flexibility and physical stamina. It demands the ability to communicate effectively, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain a safe, compliant kitchen environment, in line with local health and safety regulations. The position also involves preparation duties, such as organizing mise en place and cleaning workstations, ensuring a smooth class flow. Job Requirements

  • Ability to communicate verbally and work cooperatively with associates and customers
  • Ability to remain standing for up to 4 hours
  • Ability to move about the store directing class participants and retrieving merchandise
  • Ability to perceive and differentiate flavors or odors using tongue or nose
  • Ability to grab, reach, push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch
  • Ability to use hands for chopping, whisking, slicing, stirring and other techniques
  • Ability to lift and move merchandise up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders
  • Ability to operate computer and POS systems
  • Availability to work 12 to 16 hours per week including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Regular and predictable attendance with flexibility for class assignments
  • Ability to work in a variable kitchen environment with open flames and food allergens

Job Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Degree in culinary arts preferred or equivalent culinary experience
  • 1-2 years of kitchen operations experience
  • Valid Food Manager Certification
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Passion for community engagement and exceptional customer experience

Job Duties

  • Represent Sur La Table’s brand and culture by creating memorable educational experiences that inspire repeat visits and customer loyalty
  • Deliver exceptional in-store pastry and baking classes following recipes and game plans to ensure quality
  • Communicate technical pastry concepts clearly and encouragingly
  • Stay current on products and engage in ongoing training
  • Drive sales by upholding kitchen standards and promoting retail items featured in classes
  • Ensure high enrollment and positive guest feedback to meet or exceed culinary program goals
  • Assist in class setup and breakdown including prepping ingredients and cleaning workstations
  • Maintain compliance with food safety standards and sanitation regulations
  • Handle tools, ingredients, and kitchen equipment safely
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels and control culinary expenses
  • Support store safety and cleanliness and address maintenance needs
  • Adhere to wage and hour laws and Sur La Table policies
