The Routing Specialist role at General Produce is a vital position within the transportation and logistics department. This full-time position, with a schedule from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM, focuses on optimizing delivery routes to maximize efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and ensure exceptional service to customers. The specialist works closely with the transportation team to analyze data, apply routing software, and coordinate schedules that improve the overall performance of the delivery network.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation routing or related fields
  • Experience with transportation management systems and routing software
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred education in logistics, supply chain, or related fields
  • Valid California Driver License
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and Hours of Service compliance
  • Proficiency with Produce Pro, Samsara, Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to calculate transportation metrics and financial data
  • Demonstrates decision-making skills and supports continuous improvement

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation routing, logistics planning, fleet operations, transportation analytics, supply chain operations, or a related field
  • Experience utilizing transportation management systems and routing software
  • High school diploma or GED required, additional education in logistics, supply chain, or a related field is preferred
  • Maintain a valid California Driver License
  • Strong understanding of transportation operations, route optimization principles, geographic route planning, DOT regulations, and Hours of Service compliance
  • Proficient in Produce Pro, Samsara, fleet management systems, Microsoft Excel, and other transportation management software
  • Solid knowledge of supply chain management, budgeting, operations management, inventory control, material handling, and customer service
  • Strong analytical abilities with experience interpreting operational data, identifying trends, and translating findings into actionable business recommendations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to calculate route metrics, labor costs, cost per stop, cost per mile, revenue per route, net gross margin, percentages, and other transportation performance metrics
  • Demonstrates sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to solve operational challenges using data-driven decision-making while supporting continuous improvement initiatives

Job Duties

  • Design, maintain, and continuously improve delivery routes to maximize efficiency, productivity, and customer service while reducing transportation costs
  • Create, modify, consolidate, and eliminate routes based on customer needs, delivery volume, geography, delivery frequency, and operational requirements
  • Coordinate routing for new customers, vendor backhauls, special deliveries, and changing business needs to ensure efficient service
  • Balance driver workloads and stop distribution to improve productivity, reduce unnecessary labor, and support efficient scheduling
  • Monitor route hours, labor costs, fleet utilization, and transportation performance metrics to identify trends and opportunities for improvement
  • Utilize Produce Pro, Samsara, and other transportation management systems to develop, analyze, and optimize delivery routes and network performance
