The Public Works Department, specifically the Refuse Collection division, is seeking a dedicated professional to join as a Waste Reduction and Recycling Program Specialist. This role is pivotal in developing, implementing, and promoting the city’s comprehensive waste reduction and recycling programs. The position offers a competitive salary range from $52,000.00 to $84,052.14 and focuses on technical and professional expertise in sustainability initiatives within the community.

As a Waste Reduction and Recycling Program Specialist, you will be instrumental in fostering sustainable waste management practices by designing and executing programs that target landfill waste reduction through methods such as recycling and composting. The role involves project planning, training, monitoring, and adapting programs to meet community needs. You will lead educational campaigns, produce promotional materials, and act as a liaison aiding businesses, residents, and city employees in understanding and participating in waste reduction efforts.

Additionally, this position oversees commercial franchise applications, manages office recycling initiatives, monitors compliance with waste hauling regulations, and seeks funding through grants and business cases to support zero-waste objectives. A critical part of the job is to analyze recycling technologies for their environmental and financial impacts, preparing reports and providing professional recommendations for program enhancements.

Engagement in community outreach is crucial, including participation in seminars, public forums, and collaboration with local institutions such as Alachua County, the University of Florida, and local recyclers. You will also coordinate recycling efforts for community events and administer the city's Adopt-A-Street Program, promoting volunteer participation and ensuring safety compliance.

The role requires maintaining the Solid Waste Division's web presence and social media content, responding to inquiries generated from these platforms, and providing expert knowledge on legal and environmental recycling practices. This position demands strong communication skills, ability to develop effective public messaging, and the capacity to work independently while exercising sound judgment.
