Job Description
The hiring establishment is a company that specializes in maritime preservation services, focusing on the quality control and assurance of preservation work performed onboard commercial and United States Navy vessels. This company emphasizes adherence to established Navy regulations and industry standards, as well as specific contractual requirements outlined in detailed Scopes of Work. The company operates in a highly regulated field where safety, precision, and compliance with technical standards are paramount. Working closely with customer Quality Assurance (QA) personnel, the company ensures that all tasks performed meet the rigorous demands of both commercial and military maritime environments.
The company is currently seeking a Quality Control Inspector to join its team. This role is essential in maintaining the highest level of quality and adherence to standards in the preservation process carried out on ships. Reporting directly to the Quality Control Manager and receiving project direction from the IMIA Project Manager or Supervisor on site, the Quality Control Inspector plays a pivotal role in managing and documenting quality assurance tasks. The inspector is responsible for producing both electronic and handwritten Quality Assurance documentation which serves as Objective Quality Evidence for the preservation work. This includes developing and maintaining a Test and Inspection Plan (TIP) for all assigned jobs, ensuring that each phase of the project complies with specifications.
The position requires a robust understanding of maritime painting standards, with particular emphasis on US Navy ship preservation criteria. Accuracy is critical as the inspector monitors various key metrics such as metal anchor tooth profiles, paint wet/dry film thickness readings, steel temperatures, and environmental conditions throughout the preservation process. Expertise with tools such as micrometers, dry film thickness gauges, infrared thermometers, and psychrometers is necessary. The role demands meticulous attention to detail and the ability to maintain equipment calibration and certification intervals.
A fundamental component of this job is safety. The Quality Control Inspector must complete all tasks in a safe and efficient manner to prevent injury to themselves or others. The working environment includes scaffolds, ladders, confined spaces, and areas with extreme temperatures, high noise levels, and exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes. Physical agility, dexterity, and the endurance to work 8-10 hour days under these conditions are necessary. The job may also require overtime, shift work, and frequent travel.
The position offers a pay range of $30.00 to $38.00 per hour depending on experience. It does not entail supervisory responsibilities but requires the inspector to interact professionally and collaboratively with supervisors, co-workers, and customer representatives. Computer literacy is also important; skills in word processing, spreadsheets, email, and databases are required for various documentation and calculations related to preservation readings.
In summary, this role offers an opportunity for individuals who are keen on applying their knowledge of maritime industry standards, quality control, and preservation techniques within a challenging and safety-critical environment. Candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent, and certifications such as NACE Inspector or SSPC NBPI, who have experience or training in marine preservation, particularly within Navy standards, would find this role well suited to their skills and professional interests.
