Vigor Marine Group is seeking a skilled Coatings Inspector to join their quality assurance team. This position is an hourly role with a competitive rate of $40.00 per hour. As a Coatings Inspector, you will be responsible for developing, administering, and scheduling tests and inspections related to marine coating applications. The role involves inspecting in-process and final craft work for conformity with regulatory, contractual, and quality standards. The inspector will document results and prepare reports based on test and inspection plans designed by the Quality Department.

Your duties will include developing test and inspection plans in compliance with NAVSEA standards, Coast Guard regulations, and Classification Society requirements. You will act as a liaison between supervisory staff, craft personnel, and regulatory agencies to ensure all testing and inspection requirements are satisfactorily met prior to calls for final inspection. Monitoring workmanship according to marine and shipbuilding standards, ensuring accurate calibration of tools and instruments, and reporting deficiencies requiring corrective action are critical aspects of this role.

This position requires maintaining positive and cooperative relationships with all involved parties including crafts, owner representatives, and regulatory officials. You will assist management in developing process control documentation and provide training to craft supervisors to ensure adherence to quality standards. Additionally, random checks of purchased and installed materials, overseeing subcontractor qualification, and verifying quality assurance requirements imposed by external agencies will be part of your responsibilities.

Working in Vigor’s dynamic shipyard environment demands knowledge of SSPC and NACE acceptance criteria for marine coatings, strong inspection skills, and the ability to interpret complex construction specifications and regulatory documents. The role also requires excellent communication abilities, conflict resolution skills, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities independently. Familiarity with PC and software applications like MS Office is essential, along with a commitment to customer service and quality processes.

This role requires a minimum of five years of experience in coatings inspection within marine, bridge, heavy construction, or industrial manufacturing environments. Preferred certifications include Level 2 or higher from NACE or SSPC for Paint and Coating inspection. Physically, you must be able to handle the demands of shipyard work, including walking between job sites, climbing stairways and ladders, entering confined spaces, and occasionally lifting weights up to 50 pounds. Local and occasional out-of-town travel may be required.

Job Requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Five or more years of coatings inspection experience in marine, bridges, heavy construction or industrial manufacturing environments
  • NACE or SSPC Inspection Certification - Paint and Coating Level 2 or above preferred
  • Knowledge of applicable SSPC and/or NACE acceptance criteria for marine coating applications
  • Effective knowledge of inspection tools and techniques required to conduct marine blast and coating inspection
  • Knowledge of principles and practice of marine or class society surveying, vessel operations, or U.S. Coast Guard inspections
  • Ability to read and interpret construction specifications, complex regulatory documents and contracts
  • Skilled at conducting inspections and guiding others
  • Ability to apply a systems approach to work planning and execution
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with diverse groups
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities independently
  • Ability to work in a complex multi-craft union environment
  • Proficiency with PC and software applications including MS Office and database programs
  • Ability to provide strong customer service and adhere to customer requirements and satisfaction
  • Skill in setting high expectations and inspiring employees to meet standards

Job Duties

  • Develops tests and inspection plans for areas of responsibility in accordance with internal quality requirements and contract specifications
  • Serves as liaison between supervision, crafts and regulatory agencies
  • Ensures that all preliminary inspection requirements have been satisfied and are accomplished in accordance with contract specifications prior to final inspection call outs to regulatory agencies
  • Monitors craft work to ensure proper workmanship is in accordance with regulatory agencies, classification society, NAVSEA Standard Items, Vigor Industrial and acceptable shipbuilding practices
  • Ensures that all instrumentation and gauges used in testing procedures are properly calibrated
  • Informs Project Management, Quality Director, Operations Managers/Directors of all deficiencies requiring corrective action
  • Establishes and maintains positive, cooperative working relationships with crafts, owner representatives, and regulatory agency officials
  • Assists Managers, the Quality Director and supervisors in developing test memos and Process Control Procedures
  • Develops and assists in administering training to craft supervisors and test directors
  • Ensures materials purchased and installed meet contract specifications by performing random checks
  • Ensures subcontractors' qualifications meet regulatory and contract requirements
  • Reviews and qualifies all Quality Assurance requirements imposed by outside agencies
  • Coordinates with management and craft supervisors to ensure all personnel meet minimum skill, ability and certifications to accomplish assigned tasks
