Job Description
The hiring institution is a university dedicated to fostering educational excellence and supporting its community through robust communication strategies that align with its core mission and objectives. As a comprehensive higher education institution, it values the vital connection between effective communication and institutional growth, reputation, and stakeholder engagement. This university prioritizes transparent and compelling communication with various internal and external audiences including students, faculty, staff, parents, and community partners. The university’s public relations department plays a crucial role in maintaining this communication, enhancing the institution's brand, and promoting its initiatives through dynamic and thoughtful public relations work.
The role of Public Relations Coordinator is pivotal within the communications team at the university. This position is designed to support the public relations efforts by providing administrative assistance and contributing to writing and editorial projects that elevate the university’s messaging. The Public Relations Coordinator is responsible for drafting various types of content such as news stories, blog posts, press releases, and other communications targeted for both internal and external stakeholders. Moreover, this position assists university leadership by preparing written materials including remarks, correspondence, and talking points to ensure consistency in institutional messaging.
In addition to content creation, the coordinator offers editorial support by proofreading and editing communications to maintain clarity, accuracy, and alignment with the university’s brand identity. A significant portion of the role involves project and administrative duties, such as managing editorial calendars, supporting media outreach and event coordination, organizing interviews and media events, and facilitating campus visits and on-site media management. The role also involves monitoring media coverage and engagement, tracking communication metrics to evaluate impact, and assisting with the coordination and supervision of student writers to ensure quality and timely content submissions.
Digital and social media responsibilities form another important facet of this position. The coordinator supports the scheduling and drafting of social media posts for executives and institutional announcements, manages article uploads on the university's news webpage, and continually updates online content to remain current and accurate. Monitoring the performance of social media platforms and providing feedback to leaders helps to optimize the university’s communication outreach and audience engagement.
This full-time position requires a bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, English, Creative Writing, or a related field, and at least one year of relevant work experience or internship in communications, public relations, or writing-intensive environments. Practical knowledge of digital tools such as WordPress, social media scheduling software, and design programs like Canva is preferred to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in communication tasks.
Essential competencies for the role include a strong customer service orientation, professionalism, adaptability, excellent attention to detail, confidentiality, creativity, and continuous improvement mindset. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are critical, as is the ability to build trust, solve problems systematically, manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, and collaborate effectively with colleagues. Notably, this university embraces a Christ-first faith environment, encouraging spiritual support within its community.
The role may require non-routine working hours during certain periods of the year and entails physical requirements such as sitting for extended periods and the ability to navigate the campus and stairs. The position offers a dynamic, supportive environment where communication professionals contribute meaningfully to advancing the university’s mission and fostering engagement across a diverse and vibrant academic community.
