The role of Utility Engineer at Lonza is a fully site-based position critical to ensuring uninterrupted manufacturing operations and regulatory compliance. This role serves as the technical Subject Matter Expert for essential plant utility systems, including Water for Injection (WFI), clean steam, process utilities, and more. The Utility Engineer works closely with various departments such as Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and Facilities to provide technical guidance and support to utility operators and technicians. By monitoring, analyzing, and troubleshooting vital systems like water purification and wastewater distribution, the Utility Engineer ensures the continuous and compliant delivery of utility supply necessary for biopharmaceutical production. This role is pivotal in maintaining manufacturing precision aligned with the highest quality and safety standards required in a highly regulated environment.
Candidates in this role will lead and execute engineering projects from initiation through design, construction, commissioning, and validation while maintaining critical engineering documentation such as PFDs, P&IDs, specifications, and validation protocols. The position emphasizes continuous improvement through root-cause analysis, deviation resolution, corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs), and audit readiness. Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering
- 3-8+ years experience in utilities or process engineering
- Experience in regulated GMP or biopharma environment
- Strong knowledge of industrial utility systems and regulatory compliance
- Proficient in troubleshooting utility systems and process failures
- Ability to manage full engineering projects
- Willingness to work off-hours when needed
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial) or equivalent technical credentials
- 3-8+ years of experience in utilities or process engineering preferably in GMP or biopharma environment
- Strong understanding of industrial utility infrastructure and engineering design principles
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (FDA, EMA, cGMP) and instrumentation standards
- Proven troubleshooting abilities for process failures
- Demonstrated project management skills across full project lifecycles
Job Duties
- Deliver operational impact by ensuring continuous, uninterrupted, and compliant utility supply to support biopharma manufacturing
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and Facilities teams while providing technical guidance to utility operators and technicians
- Monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot critical water systems (WFI, WRO), clean steam generation, compressed gases, and wastewater distribution
- Lead and execute engineering projects across full lifecycle from initiation to commissioning and validation
- Develop and maintain critical engineering documentation including PFDs, P&IDs, specifications, design reviews, and validation protocols
- Perform root-cause analyses, resolve deviations, implement CAPAs, and maintain audit readiness
- Manage project scopes, budgets, contractor packages, and contribute to global engineering standards evolution
