The Project Engineer position at Baker Construction is a critical role within the company’s operations, offering an exciting opportunity to work on multiple small projects or a single medium to large-scale project. In this role, the Project Engineer supports field activities and project administration, working closely with the Project Manager to ensure the successful execution of projects from start to finish. Typical responsibilities include managing the job transition process, overseeing cost and schedule management, conducting technical evaluations, ensuring quality and safety compliance, and coordinating procurement and contract management efforts. The role demands direct involvement with key project deliverables such as monthly billing approvals, project scheduling, budget management, progress reporting, and regulatory compliance.

Project Engineers at Baker Construction collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including superintendents and field engineers, to maintain streamlined workflows and support site operations. This position requires acute attention to detail and the ability to analyze financial data, generate construction estimates, and interface with pre-construction teams to align project scopes and procurement plans. Additionally, Project Engineers lead efforts to drive continuous improvement initiatives such as LEAN and SQP committees, ensuring ongoing enhancements in project delivery and efficiency.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience or six years of construction-related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • ability to communicate effectively with all levels of project workers
  • ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents, technical procedures, and government regulations
  • ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures
  • strong mathematical skills including fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, geometry, and trigonometry
  • understanding of cost accounting principles
  • basic understanding of construction software such as Primavera, Timberline, Vista
  • ability to customize and modify spreadsheets
  • ability to direct work and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of co-workers
  • ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • excellent problem-solving skills
  • ability to develop construction schedules via the critical path method
  • understanding of contracts, specifications, drawings, and scope of work
  • proactive approach to maximize return on investment
  • willingness to travel up to 25 percent

Job Duties

  • Generate and obtain approvals of monthly billing and earned values
  • develop and manage project schedules on small to mid-sized projects
  • analyze job cost summaries and project reports
  • alert project team regarding resource management and project impacts
  • generate and approve budgets and job cost summaries
  • estimate change orders and collaborate with pre-construction teams
  • manage job transition and procurement plans
  • generate material take-offs and procurement documentation
  • solicit and review vendor proposals
  • prepare purchase orders and manage contracts
  • compile monthly financial reports and participate in financial reviews
  • approve and code project invoices
  • generate technical records and constructability reports
  • coordinate as-built record generation
  • manage work package closures and project turnover processes
  • document contract changes and claims impacts
  • lead LEAN and SQP improvement committees
  • ensure subcontractor compliance with contracts
  • manage safety and risk reporting
  • conduct new hire orientation and assist with training coordination
