Job Description

Don's Prepared Foods is a leading manufacturer on the East Coast specializing in prepared gourmet deli salads, gourmet cream cheese spreads, dips, entrée's, and a wide range of high-quality prepared foods. As a family-owned business, Don's Prepared Foods operates with a deep commitment to quality and tradition, managing over 130 distinct products across its three well-known brands: Don's Salads, Melanie's Medleys, and Artisan Deli. The company is currently seeking a Cook to join its production team at the Schwenksville, PA food manufacturing plant. This role is an essential part of the production process, where the Cook is responsible for preparing big batches of delicious, high-quality products that align with the company's standards. The position offers an hourly, non-exempt schedule, with a start time at 3 AM from Monday to Friday, catering especially to early risers who value consistent work hours and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a well-established family business.

In this role, the Cook will prepare ingredients by cooking, blanching, and chilling according to the daily schedule, ensuring compliance with all critical control points and food safety documentation. The Cook will follow internal recipes and procedures meticulously, maintain sanitation standards, and handle ingredients for upcoming production days. This position requires strict adherence to USDA, FDA, SQF, and HACCP regulations, supported by ongoing communication with management and quality assurance teams to safeguard product safety and quality. Working with today’s technology, Cooks will utilize a computer tablet to report on jobs and maintain production records within an ERP system.

Job Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend English
  • Must be comfortable with the environment: cook room is hot, production areas are refrigerated at 34 to 38 degrees
  • Must have cooking knowledge and terminology, be able to follow recipes, and understand proportions
  • Must be able to weigh and read a scale accurately and perform and understand basic math calculations
  • Must be able to consistently lift 40 to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to push, pull, and mix product
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background and pre-employment drug test

Job Qualifications

  • Cooking knowledge and terminology

  • Prior experience in production or manufacturing cooking preferred
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Effective communication skills

Job Duties

  • Prepare for production by cooking, blanching, and chilling ingredients according to the daily production schedule
  • Meet Critical Control Points (CCPs) and properly complete food safety documentation
  • Follow internal recipes and procedures to maintain quality
  • Defrost and prepare ingredients for the following production days
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize the kitchen between batches and at the end of the day taking special care to avoid cross contamination of allergens
  • Ensure all USDA, FDA, SQF, and HACCP regulations are fulfilled daily
  • Use a computer tablet to fulfill and report jobs in the ERP system
  • Communicate with management and alert QA of any issues that may pose a risk to food safety
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOP)
