The role available is an Assistant Team Leader position, focusing on supporting daily operational activities at the store level to enhance profitability, ensure compliance, and foster an exceptional customer and team experience. This position plays a critical part in supporting the Team Leader by managing various functions such as sales, buying, merchandising, labor control, and regulatory compliance. The Assistant Team Leader is expected to lead and develop team members by cultivating a positive working environment, mentoring for growth, and maintaining high standards in retail execution. Responsibilities include working closely with the Team Leader to analyze sales and labor reports, develop creative store layouts, maintain and build vendor relationships, and resolve team concerns effectively. The candidate will often act as the point person in the Team Leader’s absence, thus requiring strong leadership and decision-making skills.

Fundamentally, this role requires an individual who embodies Whole Foods Market’s core values, possesses high energy, enthusiasm, and a growth mindset. The Assistant Team Leader should have excellent interpersonal and motivational skills, ability to teach and mentor others constructively, and a solid understanding of product knowledge and regulatory policies. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other operations-related applications will support the management of financial performance, inventory, and labor scheduling. Experience requirements include at least 18 months of retail team member experience with a minimum of 6 months in a supervisory capacity.

The physical demands of the role include lifting up to 50 pounds, long periods of standing and walking, the ability to perform various motions such as bending and twisting, and flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays when needed. Job Requirements

  • minimum 18 months retail team member experience
  • minimum 6 months supervisory experience
  • must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • ability to stand and walk 6-8 hours a day
  • ability to perform bending, twisting, squatting and reaching motions
  • exposure to FDA approved cleaning chemicals
  • ability to work in cold, warm, wet and dry conditions
  • ability to work flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • ability to use tools and equipment including knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks, and other heavy machinery
  • may require use of ladders

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • develops and maintains creative store layout and product merchandising
  • works with Team Leader to achieve sales, purchasing, and labor targets
  • assists Team Leader in analysis of sales, reports and labor
  • demonstrates advanced product knowledge and develops/maintains awareness of new products
  • maintains good vendor relationships, develops new vendor relations, and ensures all paperwork is properly submitted for vendor processing
  • works with Team Leader to resolve team concerns or issues
  • functions as point person and departmental person in charge in absence of Team Leader
  • sets and achieves the highest standards of retail execution
  • fosters and encourages a positive environment of outstanding teamwork, mutual respect, and exceptional morale
  • consistently communicates and models WFM vision and goals
  • maintains awareness of customer flows and needs and directs Team Members as necessary to satisfy and delight customers
  • responds promptly to customer needs and questions
  • selects, trains, develops, mentors, motivates, and counsels Team Members in a manner that sustains a high-performance team and minimizes turnover
  • provides timely, thorough, and thoughtful performance evaluations
