The role of a Prep Cook at Magnolia Bakery is integral to ensuring that all baked goods and prepped items meet the company’s high standards of excellence. The Prep Cook is responsible for preparing and baking menu items precisely according to established recipes and brand benchmarks. This role is critical in maintaining a safe and sanitary work environment that complies with food safety regulations. The Prep Cook not only prepares dessert items but also plays a key role in inventory management and communication relating to stock levels and production needs. They adhere strictly to safety procedures in handling equipment and cleaning supplies, which underscores Magnolia Bakery’s commitment to operational excellence.

The Prep Cook collaborates closely with the Production Manager and Production Supervisor to complete daily preparation lists and ensure seamless kitchen operations. Responsibilities include assembling and weighing ingredients accurately, preparing various icings and fillings, and completing essential prep work such as shredding carrots, chopping and toasting nuts, and prepping ingredients for pies and crisps. Beyond preparation, the Prep Cook also manages the cleanliness and organization of the work area, ensuring all equipment like mixers is sanitized and floors are cleaned regularly. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive and cooperative attitude with team members.

This position requires standing and walking for extended periods, sometimes up to five hours without breaks, and involves moderate to heavy lifting and repetitive motions. Clear communication skills, manual dexterity, good organizational abilities, and time management skills are also essential. The Prep Cook must be flexible with working hours which may include days, weekends, and overnight shifts. Job Duties

  • Responsible for preparing dessert items in accordance with production requirements and Magnolia quality standards while maintaining a safe and sanitary work environment
  • Prepares desserts of consistent quality following recipes and production
  • start food items that are prepared ahead of time

  • note any out-of-stock times or possible shortages to the Kitchen Manager
  • Demonstrates safe food handling practices and follow safety procedures for using equipment and cleaning supplies
  • Operates and monitors proper functioning of equipment to include mixers and choppers and meat slicers

  • Completing prep cook list as made by Production Manager and/or Production Supervisor
  • Assemble ingredients to prepare foods according to standard recipes, measure, weight, portion and label according to guidelines
  • Stocking prep cook area with all goods needed for their shift, butter, milk, Nilla wafers, bananas, coconut, nuts, storage containers, utensils, etc
  • Cleaning prep cook area including walls, tables, all mixers, sweeping and mopping floor
  • Stocking goods for the next prep cook shift, especially butter, so it has time to soften
  • Keeping an inventory of icings and fillings are needed and keeping them stocked as necessary
  • Keeping the Production Manager/Floor Supervisor aware of progress throughout the day, as well as bring to the Manager’s attention of any stock that we are running low or out of
  • Helping all back of house staff when all tasks are completed, including popping cupcakes from the pans, wrapping cupcakes, stocking/cleaning baker’s refrigerator, helping porters and cake icers as needed
