The Power System Technician II (IC Engine Generator and Emergency Backup Power) role is a critical position at UT Southwestern, responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of campus emergency power generation systems. This role ensures reliable backup and peak power generation across hospital and clinical facilities by maintaining diesel, natural gas, and gasoline-powered generators ranging from 5kW to 3MW capacity. The Power System Technician II executes preventive maintenance schedules, load bank testing, emissions compliance, diagnostics, repairs, and system commissioning. Additionally, this role involves SCADA/PLC monitoring and collaboration with contractors and plant operations teams. This is a full-time position based at the Dallas campus, requiring work availability every day of the year, including weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts. As an essential position, the Power System Technician II may need to respond to emergencies and work extended shifts. The job demands hands-on experience with IC engine generators, transfer switches, electrical controls, and diesel engine systems, preferably within hospital, university, utility, or industrial environments. Prospective candidates must be prepared to contribute to maintaining critical backup power systems that support UT Southwestern’s mission of providing exceptional patient care and research facilities.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • seven years of industrial or utilities experience with IC power generators and related electrical systems
  • or five years experience and technical trade school or military training
  • ability to work 365 days including weekends, holidays, and on-call
  • availability for emergency responses and extended shifts
  • experience with diesel, natural gas, and gasoline-powered generators
  • knowledge of SCADA/PLC systems
  • valid licenses and certifications as preferred
  • ability to interpret schematic wiring
  • ability to coordinate with contractors and plant operations teams
  • essential position compliance with Texas Education Code 51.215

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent or vocational school
  • seven years experience in utilities or industrial trade including maintenance and repair of diesel and gaseous IC engines and electrical systems
  • or five years experience with two-year technical electrical or mechanical trade school or military training or apprenticeship
  • experience in university and hospital campus environments preferred
  • EGSA or similar certification preferred
  • Class A and B UST license preferred
  • EPA method 9 opacity certification preferred

Job Duties

  • Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts power generating and switching systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures
  • operates switchboards and synchronizes generators
  • adjusts frequency, voltage, and loads on 13.8 kV and 4.16 kV systems
  • performs, oversees contractors, and coordinates preventive maintenance of generators including load bank and emissions testing
  • diagnoses and repairs generators including radiator hoses, block heaters, battery chargers, and water pumps
  • tests fuel, coolant, and oil
  • diagnoses electrical parts on engines and transfer switches and interprets schematic wiring
  • assists in developing preventive maintenance schedules
  • provides fueling services to emergency generators
  • installs and maintains data acquisition and telemetry equipment
  • monitors equipment and maintains detailed operational records
  • tests and calibrates meters and protective devices
  • repairs and modifies control circuitry
  • reviews submittal drawings and assists in commissioning new generator projects
  • performs equipment inspections
  • communicates issues and recommends corrective actions
  • manages inventory and maintains work areas
  • completes work orders using automated maintenance systems
  • attends staff and training meetings
  • performs other duties as assigned
