Job Description
Greenwich House is a venerable nonprofit organization based in New York City, with a rich history dating back to 1902 when it was founded as a settlement house to support the city's growing immigrant population. Over more than a century, Greenwich House has evolved into a dynamic community-focused institution whose mission is to empower individuals and communities through a wide range of transformative programs. These encompass health services, human services, education, and arts initiatives, serving thousands of New Yorkers each year. Greenwich House is deeply committed to equity, compassion, and fostering wellness and creativity in the diverse populations it serves. This enduring commitment to social impact is reflected in every initiative, outreach effort, and community engagement activity the organization undertakes.
As an employer, Greenwich House offers more than just a job - it offers a mission-driven work environment where employees are part of a passionate, collaborative team dedicated to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The organization values its staff's contributions and fosters a workplace culture that emphasizes respect, inclusivity, and continuous growth. Full-time employees benefit from competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and access to exclusive programs, classes, and events.
The Porter Supervisor role at Greenwich House is a critical position responsible for overseeing all custodial and porter operations across the nonprofit's facilities located at 623 Broadway in New York City. This position ensures that all buildings remain clean, safe, and welcoming environments for clients, staff, volunteers, funders, and visitors alike. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Porter Supervisor manages porter staff by providing supervision, training, and support to ensure high standards of cleanliness and safety are met consistently.
The role involves developing and managing staff schedules to maintain full coverage across early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, while proactively arranging coverage for staff absences and handling last-minute operational demands. This demanding position requires a hands-on approach as the Supervisor assumes direct responsibility for covering open shifts when substitute coverage cannot be secured.
In addition to supervisory duties, the Porter Supervisor conducts regular building walkthroughs to inspect cleaning standards and facility conditions, promptly addressing any deficiencies through corrective guidance. They coordinate closely with the Operations Coordinator to manage custodial supply inventories and ensure timely ordering of necessary materials. Planning and overseeing deep-cleaning and special projects also falls under this role, requiring the Supervisor to schedule activities around programmatic schedules to minimize disruption.
This full-time role operates Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with some flexibility required, and offers a competitive salary range of $58,000 to $60,000 annually. Ideal candidates will have prior experience in custodial or porter roles, preferably with supervisory experience in nonprofit or program-based environments. The position demands strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, alongside physical capability to handle tasks involving standing, walking, bending, and lifting weights up to 50 pounds.
Joining Greenwich House as a Porter Supervisor means becoming part of a historic institution committed to community betterment, with the opportunity to directly contribute to the operational excellence and welcoming nature of its facilities. This role not only demands operational skill and leadership but also offers a chance to support and uphold the nonprofit's powerful mission in an inspiring and inclusive workplace.
