Job Description
San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) is a public transportation agency committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transit services to the communities it serves. As a regional transit provider, RTD operates various facilities, bus stops, and amenities designed to support passenger travel and ensure seamless transportation experiences for its customers. The organization is known for its dedication to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across all its properties, reflecting its commitment to excellence and community service. RTD emphasizes professionalism and teamwork among its employees and strives to foster positive relationships with passengers, staff, and the wider community.
The Custodian position at RTD plays a vital role in keeping the interiors and exteriors of transit facilities clean and orderly, directly impacting the safety and comfort of all users. This role involves performing a broad range of custodial and minor building maintenance duties, including sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors, cleaning restrooms, dusting furniture and walls, and maintaining outdoor areas such as passenger loading zones and bus stop shelters. Custodians also manage the upkeep of custodial storage areas and utilize various cleaning tools and equipment, such as blowers, weed eaters, floor scrubbers, and pressure washers, to perform assigned tasks efficiently.
Working under general supervision with a flexible schedule subject to change according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, individuals in this role must be able to work irregular shifts and multitask effectively to meet deadlines. The position requires adherence to safety and sanitation standards, proper use of cleaning supplies and equipment, and the ability to recognize and report potential safety hazards or necessary repairs. The Custodian is expected to maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times, fostering good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
This role demands physical stamina, as custodians are frequently required to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Tasks may also include climbing, stooping, kneeling, and using hands and arms to operate equipment safely. Mental aptitude is important to understand and follow written and oral instructions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. The work environment can present exposure to various weather conditions, chemicals, and noise.
To qualify for this employment opportunity, candidates must have at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent, a minimum of six months of custodial service experience, and be at least 21 years old. A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Experience in a public transit or governmental setting is preferred but not mandatory. RTD values equity and provides reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
Full-time employees at RTD enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that encompasses health and dental insurance for themselves and their dependents, life insurance, sick leave ranging from three to twelve days per year based on service length, vacation time from one to six weeks depending on classification and tenure, and retirement benefits under the Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). The hiring process includes application submission, screening, written assessments, physical examinations, substance abuse tests, background checks, and reference verification to ensure candidate suitability and safety compliance.
This Custodian position is pivotal in maintaining the high standards of cleanliness and maintenance that San Joaquin Regional Transit District upholds in all its facilities, ensuring a positive experience for both passengers and staff. Working in this role offers individuals the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to public transportation services while benefiting from an established employee benefit program in a supportive work environment.
