Job Description
Columbia University, a prestigious Ivy League institution, is seeking a dedicated Porter to join its team as part of the Support Staff under a unionized environment. The university is renowned not only for its academic excellence and groundbreaking research but also for maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role is part of the Local 32 BJ bargaining unit, ensuring representation and benefits in line with union standards. The position is regular, offering full-time employment with a standard 40-hour workweek. The prescribed schedule is Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This scheduled routine supports the university’s operational success and campus maintenance reliability.
The Porter role ensures the upkeep of Columbia University’s apartment buildings and surrounding grounds, fostering a clean and pleasant living environment. Reporting directly to the Building Superintendent, the successful candidate will take responsibility for cleaning and maintaining interior and exterior areas as specified by campus needs. Tasks include regular maintenance of elevators, stairways, corridors, windows, floors, laundry rooms, and vacant apartments. In addition to indoor responsibilities, the position includes groundskeeping duties such as trimming trees and shrubs, fertilizing, seeding, mowing lawns, sweeping and hosing sidewalks, removing snow, and spreading salt when conditions require it.
This role demands a strong commitment to thoroughness, reliability, and safety, with occasional heavy lifting required to ensure the job is done effectively. The responsibilities demand a proactive approach to facility maintenance, contributing directly to the quality of daily life for campus residents. The role compensates at a fixed rate of $23.00 per hour, representing a fair wage consistent with union agreements and market standards.
Columbia University is an equal opportunity employer that values hiring qualified local residents. The university fosters inclusivity and accessibility in its employment practices, supporting diversity and equal opportunity for all prospective employees. The successful candidate will join a respected team that values collaboration, community, and continuous improvement in service quality.
