This position specifically works within a collaborative hospital medicine environment at Ochsner’s Medical Center, involving close cooperation among residents, fellows, attending physicians, nurses, discharge coordinators, and other healthcare professionals. Those in this role operate under supervision from the Medical Director or an assigned staff physician. The primary responsibility is to manage the overall medical and nursing care of hospital medicine patients. This includes primary and urgent medical management, emergency stabilization of critically ill patients, educational responsibilities such as teaching residents and medical students, and contributing to staff development and ongoing education. Additionally, the role involves patient education and discharge planning to ensure optimal recovery and safe transitions out of hospital care.

A successful candidate will be expected to perform these essential duties at a high professional standard, maintaining compliance with all relevant federal, state, and organizational guidelines. The position requires proficiency in advanced medical practices and the ability to address a broad spectrum of patient needs, including physical, psycho-social, educational, safety, and age-appropriate care considerations. Knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at departmental and system levels is essential. The role demands effective communication skills, computer proficiency, and the ability to work flexible schedules which may include weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts. Reliable transportation is also required since travel between different facilities may be necessary.

The educational requirements for this position differ depending on the specific healthcare license held by the candidate. Nurse Practitioners must have a Master’s degree in Nursing and hold an active APRN license in the state of practice. Physician Assistants must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant medicine or Health Sciences or be graduates of an accredited Physician Assistant Training Program. Both roles require certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, and eligibility for prescriptive authority as mandated by state licensing boards.
