Job Description

Masseria by Nicholas Stefanelli is a critically acclaimed Southern Italian fine dining restaurant located in the vibrant Union Market District of Washington, D.C. Renowned for its exceptional quality and dedication to authenticity, Masseria has made a significant mark on the culinary scene in the nation's capital. Since 2016, the restaurant has proudly earned a star in Washington, D.C.'s first-ever Michelin Guide and has maintained this prestigious accolade every year since. This recognition is a testament to the establishment's unwavering commitment to excellence in both cuisine and service. The restaurant's identity is deeply rooted in its close-knit team of gifted and dedicated professionals who collectively strive to deliver extraordinary dining experiences. What sets Masseria apart is its meticulous approach to culinary craftsmanship. In the kitchen, every element is created from scratch with a sharp focus on detail, from the bread service to all components supporting the cocktail program. The restaurant also takes pride in practicing whole animal butchery, highlighting their dedication to sustainability and quality. On the front of the house, the team consistently provides seamless, knowledgeable, and warm service, ensuring guests feel valued and nurtured at every visit. Environmentally and ethically conscious, Masseria values sourcing sustainable and local ingredients, which reinforces its mission of responsible, high-quality dining.

As a member of the Masseria team, the role offered is that of a Pastry Chef with a focus on leadership and innovation within the pastry station. This position demands an individual who can oversee the daily operations of the pastry station, ensuring it is fully prepped, meticulously organized, and held to the exceptional standards expected of a Michelin-starred kitchen. The Pastry Chef will be required to prepare and execute elaborate pastry recipes, including breads, desserts, and components for the cocktail program, strictly adhering to recipes and specifications. Innovation is encouraged as part of this role, with an expectation to stay informed about evolving culinary trends and contribute ideas to enhance the dessert program continually. Mentorship of junior kitchen staff is a key aspect of the position; the Pastry Chef will coach team members in proper techniques, sanitation protocols, and the 'from-scratch' preparation methods that exemplify Masseria's kitchen philosophy. Additionally, the role demands a careful approach to waste management by optimizing inventory rotation and whole-product utilization to control food costs without compromising quality. The Pastry Chef is also responsible for guaranteeing that all pastry items meet the restaurant’s highest standards before they reach the guest.

Masseria offers an enriching and supportive work environment that prioritizes a healthy work-life balance. Employees are encouraged to grow personally and professionally in a dynamic, creative, and passionate hospitality team. The role is full-time and requires availability for nights, weekends, and holidays. The restaurant fosters a culture based on integrity, honesty, collaboration, and high performance, all of which contribute to delivering memorable dining experiences. Working at Masseria means being part of a family that values diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunity, ensuring every team member feels respected and appreciated for their unique contributions. This is an outstanding opportunity for a pastry professional eager to work in a top-tier, Michelin-starred kitchen where culinary excellence and hospitality intersect to create unforgettable moments for guests.
