Job Description
The Michaels Companies Inc. is a leading retail destination in North America specializing in arts and crafts supplies, custom framing, and creative inspiration. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels operates over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada, along with an extensive online presence at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. As a top creative retailer, Michaels offers a wide range of products designed to fuel creativity for individuals of all ages and skill levels. The company is committed to fostering an environment of creativity, community, and celebration, providing excellent customer service and innovative event experiences within its stores.
This role at Michaels is a dynamic event coordinator and customer experience specialist position based at the Louisville-Westport, KY store. The primary responsibility is to plan, coordinate, and facilitate various in-store events including children’s birthday parties, craft classes, and other creative gatherings designed to engage guests of all ages. The ideal candidate will deliver a stress-free, fun, and engaging experience for guests while maintaining high operational standards. This role involves direct customer interaction, offering expert assistance in shopping, product discovery, and checkout, all while ensuring adherence to company policies and standards. Key operational tasks such as merchandise stocking, truck unloading, and store recovery duties also fall under this role to support overall store effectiveness.
The event coordination aspect of the role requires strong organizational skills, creativity, and the ability to engage effectively with a diverse clientele ranging from toddlers to senior citizens. The coordinator will be responsible for organizing multiple concurrent events, demonstrating craft projects, providing face painting and other activities, and managing party add-ons such as goody bags and balloons. Communication with clients and store team members is essential, as is the need to respond flexibly to client feedback and unexpected situations by creating backup plans. The role also includes administrative duties like managing emails, phone calls, and event paperwork.
Customer service is a significant element of this position, with responsibilities extending to helping customers locate products, facilitating program enrollments such as the Rewards program and Private Label Credit Cards, and supporting omni-channel processes like Buy Online Pickup in Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS). Ensuring a fast and friendly checkout experience and maintaining store cleanliness and safety standards are integral parts of the daily routine. The role also includes cross-training in custom framing sales and production, contributing to a well-rounded retail experience.
Candidates should be energetic, enthusiastic, and capable of managing job stress effectively while interacting positively with customers and team members. Previous experience in retail, customer service, and working with children or children’s events is preferred. Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are essential to success. Physical demands include the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the store, lift and carry merchandise, and perform tasks involving bending, reaching, and climbing ladders.
Michaels offers a supportive work environment with robust benefits for full-time and part-time team members, including health insurance (medical, dental, vision), paid time off, tuition assistance, and generous employee discounts. The company is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity, inclusion, and providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals. This role provides a unique opportunity to join a vibrant retail team that encourages creativity, customer engagement, and personal development through meaningful events and everyday retail experiences.
