Job Description
Cincinnati Children’s is a leading pediatric healthcare institution dedicated to making children’s health better through a comprehensive team approach, innovative science, and compassionate patient care. Recognized nationally as one of the top 10 children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for over 15 years, Cincinnati Children’s consistently ranks among the top three children’s hospitals for NIH funding. The hospital has earned numerous accolades including being named one of America’s Best Large Employers and America’s Best Employers for New Grads in 2025, as well as inclusion in Fortune’s America’s Most Innovative Companies. It is also known for fostering a great work environment, as evidenced by consecutive Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and recognition as a Leading Disability Employer. This commitment to excellence extends not only to patient care but also to employee empowerment and innovation, embracing tools like artificial intelligence to support smarter work processes and better outcomes.
The Café Crew member plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the food services department at Cincinnati Children’s. This is a part-time position, offering flexible hours from Monday to Friday, 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM, with approximately 20 hours per week and a 0.5 FTE status. The starting pay range is competitive at $16.50 to $19.80 per hour, reflective of experience, skills, and equity, with potential additional pay for shifts, on-call duties, or weekend differentials.
In this role, the Café Crew member is responsible for preparing and serving various café menu items including smoothies, sandwiches, and snacks, always adhering to established recipes and strict food safety standards. Handling customer transactions through the POS system efficiently and maintaining accurate cash management practices are also crucial. The Café Crew member must provide friendly, professional assistance to customers, offering menu information and recommendations to enhance their dining experience. Restocking of food, beverages, condiments, supplies, and retail displays throughout the shift ensures smooth service flow. The role demands vigilant monitoring of product quality, proper inventory rotation using FIFO (First In, First Out) practices, and removal of expired items to maintain safety and quality standards.
Maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of workstations, equipment, dining areas, and service counters is an essential part of this job. The Café Crew member supports the lunch rush and other peak periods by working efficiently and collaboratively with the team to ensure timely service. Strict adherence to departmental safety, sanitation, infection prevention, and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) standards is mandatory to uphold Cincinnati Children’s commitment to providing a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Physical requirements include the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift and carry food products and supplies, and perform tasks such as bending, reaching, and pushing or pulling carts or equipment in a busy food service environment.
This role is ideal for individuals seeking an entry-level opportunity in food service or retail within a respected healthcare setting. While no directly related experience is required, preference is given to candidates with a high school diploma (or equivalent) and previous experience in customer service, cashiering, retail, café, restaurant, or food service environments. Cincinnati Children’s is committed to equal opportunity employment and fostering a respectful workplace, welcoming a diverse range of applicants. The Café Crew member position offers a supportive atmosphere where employees can contribute meaningfully to the hospital’s mission, grow professionally, and be part of a team that values innovation, quality, and kindness.
