Job Description

Seattle Colleges is a prominent public community college district located in Seattle, Washington, consisting of three distinct colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College, and South Seattle College, along with five specialty training centers. This makes it the largest and most diverse community college district in the state of Washington. With a commitment to innovation and change, Seattle Colleges prides itself on fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion by actively working against systemic racism and supporting a broad spectrum of students from various socioeconomic and academic backgrounds. The institution operates as an open-access learning environment that prepares students for both life and career success, nurturing a diverse, engaged, and dynamic educational community.

Seattle Colleges staff and faculty benefit from competitive compensation packages, professional development opportunities, and enrichment experiences. These opportunities include committee participation, workgroups, and affinity groups, contributing to a vibrant campus atmosphere. Part-time faculty roles within this institution offer a salary range generally between $7,703 and $11,537.33 per 5-credit class load per quarter, with a starting rate typically between $7,703 and $8,912.

The opportunity available is for dedicated and innovative part-time faculty members interested in teaching across a wide variety of courses. Successful candidates demonstrate a strong commitment to cultural diversity and to working effectively in an urban college environment that values multicultural understanding. This role demands teaching adaptability, with courses potentially delivered in varied formats including in-class, hybrid, and online, as well as flexibility to teach during different times including day, evening, and weekends.

Specifically, this position is focused on hiring chef/instructors who can prepare and deliver high-quality curricula blending theory and hands-on training for professional cooking and baking careers. The instruction encompasses culinary arts, pastry, sustainability, hospitality, and related management subjects. Faculty members are required to maintain current and relevant course content aligned with industry standards, contribute to program and curriculum development, and uphold sanitation and safety standards established by state health codes and Seattle Culinary Academy guidelines.

Faculty responsibilities include organizing practical and technical lessons, conducting demonstrations, providing lab supervision, and managing equipment and kitchen maintenance. They are expected to grade examinations and practical competencies promptly, hold office hours, participate in professional development, assess course outcomes, and contribute to campus and district committees. The position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement represented by AFT-Seattle, ensuring collaborative and fair work conditions.

The ideal candidate must possess at least a bachelor's degree or two years of related training, along with a minimum of five years of practical culinary experience, including leadership or teaching roles such as executive or pastry chef positions. Candidates should have profound knowledge of food safety, sanitation, nutrition, HACCP standards, and food cost management, with a commitment to farm-to-table principles using locally sourced, seasonal products. Certification requirements include meeting Washington State and district professional technical education standards, obtaining a food handler's permit, and current CPR/first aid certification. Basic computer and multimedia skills are also necessary.

Seattle Colleges values diversity and inclusion and supports candidates who can work effectively with students for whom English is not the primary language. Candidates must demonstrate sensitivity to diverse student needs including first-generation learners, single parents, ESL students, and individuals with varied financial, learning, physical, and cultural backgrounds. Faculty must be prepared to collaborate with advisory committees and staff to promote a cooperative educational environment.

Physical demands of the role include the ability to operate kitchen and power tools, lift heavy weights, and work in dynamic campus environments subject to various weather and noise conditions. The institution adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), offering reasonable accommodations from recruitment through employment.

Seattle Colleges maintains a strict equal opportunity policy, prohibiting discrimination on any basis including race, ethnicity, age, gender identity, disability, and more. Background checks and sexual misconduct disclosure forms are required prior to hiring. Overall, this role offers an exciting opportunity for culinary professionals committed to education, industry standards, and fostering an inclusive academic community.
