The Flatbush YMCA branch is currently seeking an Older Adults Food Service Worker to join its dedicated team. This role is essential in supporting the nutritional needs of older adults attending the facility, ensuring they receive healthy, well-prepared meals in a safe and welcoming environment. The Food Service Worker will operate under the supervision of the Program Director and is responsible for preparing and serving lunch and snacks that adhere to a pre-existing menu curated according to the Department for the Aging nutritional guidelines. The position requires a clear understanding of food safety, sanitation, and operational compliance with City, State, and Federal health regulations and licenses.

Key responsibilities include assisting with meal preparation such as assembling sandwiches, salads, fruits, vegetables, and packaged foods, ensuring proper temperature and portion control during serving, and maintaining cleanliness throughout the kitchen and dining areas. This role also involves the operation of standard food service equipment and maintaining accurate records, including inventories and daily food usage logs. The Food Service Worker contributes directly to the health and well-being of the older adult community, playing an important role in ensuring meals are nutritious and served in a hygienic manner.

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has a high school diploma or GED, possesses at least one year of experience working with older adults, and holds a valid Food Handler's License. Additional certifications such as CPR, AED, and First Aid are highly desirable. Candidates should be proficient with the Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel, and have good communication skills. The ability to work well in a team, build respectful relationships with participants and the community, and demonstrate patience and organization is critical for success in this position. The working hours are weekdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, making it a part-time opportunity paying between $17.17 and $18.00 per hour.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • assist in the preparation and serving of hot and cold food
  • heat pans and arrange food items
  • serve as part of a team to assemble various food items and ingredients as assigned
  • package and wrap food items according to established procedures and portion control standards
  • ensure the proper temperature of the food
  • prepare salads, sandwiches, fruits, vegetables, packaged foods, bakery items, and other foods for distribution
  • label and date open food products
  • serve meals on serving lines, set out prepared foods, replenish containers as needed
  • assist with setting up the dining area
  • support catering activities
  • clean and sanitize work areas, tables, serving counters, chairs, and food containers
  • count and set up plates, trays, and utensils
  • operate standard food service equipment such as warmers, ovens, sealers, and packing machines
  • follow established health, safety, and sanitation principles applicable to food serving and kitchen maintenance
  • stock condiments, food items, paper goods, and supplies in storage areas
  • prepare and maintain logs and records, including an inventory of food and supplies
  • track food usage for daily production logs
  • maintain food service facilities, equipment, and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition
  • sweep and mop floors to ensure a safe and sanitary work environment
  • wash trays, pots, pans, plates, utensils, and other serving equipment
  • attend meetings, in-service training, and workshops as assigned
  • model the best practices of hospitality and positive culture
  • support all aspects of programming including community outreach, recruitment, and participant outreach
  • work enthusiastically as part of a team
  • actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events
  • perform other duties as assigned
