Job Description

New Opportunities Inc. is a well-established community action agency that operates in Waterbury, Meriden, Torrington, and 22 surrounding towns in Connecticut. Founded in 1964 as a private non-profit corporation, New Opportunities is dedicated to improving the quality of life for economically disadvantaged individuals by providing essential resources aimed at increasing their standard of living, fostering self-improvement, and maximizing self-empowerment. With a substantial annual budget exceeding $41 million and a comprehensive set of over 50 social service programs, this agency supports a wide range of clients, focusing primarily on low-income, elderly, and disabled populations. The organization is recognized as the fourth largest employer in Waterbury, with additional offices in Meriden, Torrington, Danbury, and Thomaston, ensuring accessibility and convenience for the communities they serve.

The current open position is for a Part-Time Meals on Wheels Delivery Driver. This non-union role offers an hourly wage of $16.94 with approximately 15 hours of work per week, scheduled from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. The primary function of this position is the safe, responsible, and careful operation of the program vehicle to deliver meals to homebound clients and congregate meal sites as directed. The role requires adherence to safe food handling procedures and maintenance of vehicle cleanliness both inside and out. In addition to meal delivery, the driver must monitor the well-being of clients by making contact upon delivery and notifying supervisors of any significant change in client condition, including the initiation of emergency procedures when warranted.

Effective communication is a key component of the role. The driver is expected to maintain radio contact with the central office and coordinate daily route plans with the Meals on Wheels Coordinator or Assistant, ensuring efficient delivery schedules. Vehicle maintenance is also a responsibility, including pre-loading safety checks, daily vehicle operating checklists, mileage and maintenance logs, route records, timely reporting of vehicle problems, and ensuring the vehicle is refueled at the end of each route. Accuracy in meal counts and participation in training sessions as directed by supervision further contribute to the seamless operation of the service.

This position requires at least a high school diploma or GED, a valid Connecticut driver’s license, and a minimum of two years of driving experience. It is an excellent opportunity for individuals committed to serving their communities through vital nutrition and wellness programs. Working with New Opportunities Inc. means joining an organization dedicated to social change and offering support through benefits such as a 401(k) with matching contributions, earned time, and holiday pay. The agency's mission and ongoing initiatives across energy assistance, family development, child welfare, elder services, and more make it a significant player in social services within Connecticut.
